The Post Office is to recreate a virtual city within Earls Court for a staff event in May, a key element of the group's 'biggest swathe of activity in its history' as it strives to establish an identity distinct from Royal Mail.
The firm's staff-engagement plan was outlined by Paul Swanton, senior communications manager at the Post Office, and James Wilkins, joint managing director of Post Office agency Logistik Group, who were speaking at this week's C&IT Corporate Forum in a session entitled 'Employee motivation in a downturn'.
Swanton said that rather than the usual staff conference, Post Office wanted to take a different approach to communicating the brand’s new vision to 800-1,000 senior staff.
"It's not going to be an 'event' [as such]," he explained. "It's not like anything we've done before."
He and Wilkins explained that the 'city' would include cinemas, schools, museums and parks, and that delegates will be given the opportunity to personalise their experience at the event, which will be structured around several main plenary sessions communicating the key strategy.
Swanton said that the demographic of Post Office staff is so diverse - spanning all age groups and ethnic backgrounds - that segmentation of its audiences is key. Swanton and Logistik have spent 12 months running a series of "mindset workshops" with staff, to "get their heads in the right space", he added.
Their joint presentation discussed the importance of creating events that strive to break from stale conventions and more effectively engage and motivate delegates.
The Post Office, which is in the process of becoming independent from the Royal Mail, is pursuing a "four-year vision on the back of £1.4bn [investment] from the government", Swanton added.
