Companies attack Royal Mail as compensation for packages lost in transit is axed

Companies have attacked Royal Mail for axeing compensation for packages lost in transit.

Changes introduced this month mean firms with a contract to use the Royal Mail standard business service can no longer claim for lost parcels.
If they want guaranteed compensation, they must pay extra, either for special delivery – at upwards of £5.45 – or for Royal Mail’s tracking service.

Steve McCallum, who runs Gift of Sound, an online CD/DVD retailer in Chelmsford, Essex, said his postage costs would rise by more than 500 per cent.
‘It used to cost me 78p to post a DVD through Royal Mail and I had the peace of mind of compensation if goods were lost,’ he said. ‘But it will now cost me up to £6.’

A spokesman for the Forum of Private Business said: ‘Firms that want the peace of mind of compensation are facing an astronomical increase in the cost of using Royal Mail.’

A Royal Mail spokesman said: ‘None of the major UK delivery companies provides businesses with compensation for loss or damage for untracked delivery services.’

Meanwhile, Ofcom is considering proposals by Royal Mail to raise the price of a second-class stamp from 36p to as much as 50p.

They blame Royal Mail but surely it's a consequence of the many dishonest people out there.
For every item that's genuinely 'lost' in the post maybe there's a dozen items where the sender says they've sent it but they haven't or the recipient says they haven't received it when they have.
Dearer it is, but Tracked, Recorded or Special Delivery is the only realistic option.

What is the point in sending a DVD by SD, especially if it is increasing his postage costs by 500%. Surely it would be cheaper to take the hit for any lost items himself. Also don't stamps still provide compensation so he could use them without having to pay for SD.

Agreed, SD is over the top for something worth just a few quid.
As for 'stamps still provide compensation' that was the case, more recently I think a Certificate of Posting is needed with a dozen First Class stamps (£5.52) being compensation, though this might recently have been changed.

If the minimum posting volumes for Tracked were really lowered or axed then I reckon most of what people send SD would get sent Tracked instead.

Yes indeed.
Does anyone know what the minimum volumes and costs for Tracked are, as I've not seen them on the Royal Mail website ?

Annual volumes less than 5,000 can be posted if the combined annual volumes of Royal Mail Tracked™ and Special Delivery™ on Account is at least 5,000 items. Prices for Royal Mail Tracked™ volumes less than 5,000 items are the same as 5,000 to 19,000 items.

I think a version of Tracked will be rolled out for the ordinary punter but i think it's more likely to replace RD than SD.

They wanted the so-called "free market," they now have it.

They have made their bed, now let them lie in it.

I reckon Tracked will replace both RD and SD eventually with the Tracking as the basic product with next day, signature on delivery, different compensation brackets being addons which could be mixed and matched to suit the needs of the person posting the stuff.

But then the segregation and extra security currently given to Special Delivery would, to avoid serious failures and losses, also cover all that is now Recorded Deliveery and Tracked too.

this has effected my business too, we also send goods mainly as Letters and Large letters so it would cost us 500% more in postage to pay for tracked or 1000% more for Special delivery....great!

free market in action :nana

it does seem a bit silly for RM to have to pay compensation when there is no way of knowing whether it actually was delivered or not, got lost in transit or someone having a go... tracked/recorded solves this problem by having an actual record of delivery.

yes that is why it would be a good compromise if Recorded delivery could be put back into the compensation scheme (as at the moment it is not!)

Also personal prepay customers are still covered by the compensation scheme, whereas business account customers are not,

so i just don't understand why punish the business customers who are spending the most on stamps every week?!

this wouldn't be such an issue if so much more mail had n't gone astray, as much as it has for us, recently
