A CRIME-FIGHTING postman has been praised for helping police catch and arrest a suspected thief.

Police community support officers Mark Cook and Elizabeth Holland were driving through Hullavington on January 5 at about 4pm when they heard a report that a white Nissan Primastar had been stolen from Malmesbury.

Moments later they saw the van, which made off at speed. Villagers pointed out the direction of the van and officers found it crashed into a telegraph pole. As they began their man-hunt, a local postman called over to say he had seen someone walking from the scene.

PSCO Cook said: “As I approached this man to say hello he ran. The lad managed to get an arm and I jumped on to the offender.

“We couldn’t be any more grateful for his help.”

Police are appealing for information and witnesses. If you can help police with their enquiries call Det Con Kevin Golledge, Melksham CID on 101.

A 21-year-old man from Chippenham was arrested and bailed on suspicion of theft.
