A VALLEYS’ post office owner who has clocked up 54 years behind the counter has been forced to put her retirement on hold because she can’t find a buyer.

Yvonne Phillips, 71, of Waunfawr Road, Nantyglo, wants to spend more time with husband Clayton, 73, their ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren but has been unable to sell Brynmawr Post Office, in Beaufort Street, this past year.

“The recession is taking its toll, and while we have had interest in the business no-one has any money to buy,” she said.

“I’ll have to continue working full-time but would like to retire so I can look after my husband, who is on dialysis.”

The former Nantyglo Grammar School pupil first sat behind the counter at Abertillery Post Office when she became postal and telegraph officer, aged 16.

Her career saw her work at Ebbw Vale Post Office and finally Brynmawr Post Office, in Worcester Street, in 1960, where she became branch manager.

Mrs Phillips took over the busy branch in 1990 before moving to bigger premises in the former Brigg’s Store in Beaufort Street.

During this time she has seen the service change drastically.

“We had to work everything out manually as we didn’t have calculators.

“Now we use computers and handle fewer bills. We still deal with a lot of post with internet shopping like eBay.

“I’ve made a lifetime of friends, have great memories and am seeing customers come in with their children and grandchildren,” she added.

“I will miss them greatly when I do eventually retire as it’s a community close to my heart,” said Mrs Phillips. who declined to reveal the asking price.
