Postie is a first class hero

A HERO postie ran into a blazing home to save a mum and her teenage son — then finished his round.

John McClelland, 37, dashed into the house to wake the pair up when he smelled smoke coming from inside.

After trying to smother the chip pan fire with a tea towel he led the woman and her son to safety in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire. Dad-of-two John then asked a neighbour to call the fire brigade, waited for them to come, then calmly headed off to deliver the rest of his letters.

Ambulance workers had to go and FIND him so he could be hooked up to an oxygen machine for two hours to get his carbon monoxide level down.

John said: "I've been getting a lot of stick from the guys at work — things like Fireman Sam.

"But I think anyone would do the same. It is just luck I was there and I'd seen TV ads about how to put chip pan fires out.

"You are supposed to put a tea towel over the flames, but the fire was too big and it burnt straight through so I knew I just had to get the people out."

John, of Falkirk, added: "When I told my family, my son was proud of me but my wife said that, although I did the right thing, I was daft to run in to a burning building."

Royal Mail last night praised John's efforts on Saturday, and said he would be put forward for a gong. A spokeswoman said: "He showed real bravery."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue added: "John's quick-thinking and courage are to be applauded."

"I was daft to run in to a burning building." - and against Health and Safety regulations requiring one to have regard for their own safety.

Ingredients:

Units: US | Metric

1 Mars bars or 1 Milky Way bar
1 cup plain flour
1/2 cup cornflour
1 pinch baking soda
milk or beer
oil (for deep frying)

Directions:

1 Chill the chocolate bar by keeping it in the fridge, but don't freeze it.
2 Mix the flours and bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) together.
3 Add milk (traditional) or beer (which gives a lighter result) until you get a batter with the consistency of thin cream.
4 Heat the oil until a small piece of bread will brown in a few seconds, but don't allow to smoke.
5 Remove wrapper from chilled chocolate bar.
6 Coat completely in batter.
7 Carefully lower into hot oil and fry until golden brown.
8 Serve, with ice cream or french fries, if you're so inclined.

Well, you learn something everyday, never had one and never seen one for sale which is why I thought they were urban legends.

Is it any wonder that Scotland is heart attack capital of the world...............and can you imagine what it would be without all the heroin addicts :nervous (Frankie Boyle joke I think).

I was told by chip shop owners that they wouldn't deep fry things because if it broke (and the chocolate came out) then the entire oil supply has to be changed because it's ruined.
