A BRAVE postie was today hailed a hero after pulling a pensioner from the wreckage of a car.

Vikki McRobbie, 28, rushed to the driver’s aid after his car crashed into a wall on West Road in Peterhead.

Today Royal Mail bosses praised Vikki’s actions. A spokeswoman said: “After this incredible act of bravery, Vikki carried on with her round ensuring her customers received their usual delivery of mail.”

Unless they're in imminent danger then you do not take people from their vehicle, you let them stay there (supporting their neck if necessary) and wait for the emergency services to come and take control.

In fact, what I was going to say was, what if she's "pulled them from the wreckage" causing damage to an injury they'd sustained in the accident?

It's all well and good having hero posties, but if they get injured in the process, we all know RM won't back them up, and the emergency services would just call them stupid for risking it. Still, I know I'd not just leave someone in a burning house... well, depends on who it was <evil cackle>

I think it's the difference in being trained and being not trained, we've being trained on what to do and not to do.

The photo used was of a woman in a car who had had an accident, other parts of the book have him when the photo involves a man.

My manual is the 9th edition which was out last year (but that's changed now with the removing of rescue breaths from the CPR).

The thing I worry about in car crashes is aortic rupture, where basically you stop (thanks to seatbelt and airbag etc) but your insides don't (mainly your heart) and your blood vessels effectively tear and you bleed to death in a minute or two You look alright on the outside though. Being a first aider doesn't half make you worry about sh*t that's never gonna happen lol

Also seatbelts and airbags give a sense of safety that causes speeding and reckless driving.
Furthermore although seatbelts and airbags undoubtedly save the lives of many crash victims a significant proportion of the survivors are marred for the rest of their lives with serious disabilities, whereas in the earlier days of motoring death or being slightly injured were more likely.

POSTIE was yesterday hailed a heroine after fighting through thick smoke to pull a pensioner from a crashed car.

Vikki McRobbie ran to help the driver after she saw his car smash into a wall outside a house on West Road in Peterhead.

The 28-year-old knew she had to get the pensioner out of the motor quickly as there was smoke billowing from the bonnet and there was a gas supply behind the wall.

Vikki, of Fetterangus, near Peterhead, said she struggled to see when she reached the car because of the thick black smoke.

She added: It was just instinct. I knew I had to get the man out of the car.

After a passer-by called the emergency services, Vikki spoke to police then continued on her round.

The Record told yesterday how postie John McClelland, 37, ran into a burning house in Cumbernauld to save a mum and her son.

In that case she was correct in removing the man from the car (although the original story didn't point that out) but both myself and Teefer did say that you only remove someone if they will be in more danger by remaining in position.

I personally still think that everybody should have a minimum first aid training, so that people have confidence to actually do something and do it right.
