Pay freeze figures prove value of trade union membership

The value of trade union membership was underlined by the publication of figures today (Thursday) showing that two out of three workers are suffering a pay freeze, with 15 per cent not having received a pay rise in three years. This contrasts with workers represented by the CWU, many of whom will receive pay rises of 3 per cent or more this year in deals negotiated by the union.
The report from comparison site uSwitch.com found that only three in 10 workers expect an increase this year, with the average rise being just 2.1 per cent. Inflation is presently running at 5 per cent.
CWU general secretary Billy Hayes took the chance to emphasise that although the figures make for grim reading they do also underline the value of trade union membership.
"Members of the CWU working for BT are receiving a 3 per cent pay rise for this year, while Royal Mail workers have seen wages rise by 3.5 per cent. This proves the value of trade union membership," said Billy.
"The research shows that union members in the UK receive 12.5 per cent more due to union membership. They also get better sickness and pension benefits, more holiday and more flexible hours than non-members."
So although - as this report proves - times are tough, workers are likely to do better if part of a trade union.

Chairman Hayes is probably quoting our rise over the last two years against workers who have had freezes or cuts.showing that two out of three workers are suffering a pay freeze, with 15 per cent not having received a pay rise in three years.

The report from comparison site uSwitch.com.
Now...what kind of people use a comparison site?
I would imagine more likely people who haven't had a pay rise in three years so i think their "research" may have been flawed from the start.
I've seen these online surveys...they aren't worth s**t.
Most people go through them on autopilot for the chance of winning a chance of maybe being in the draw to maybe win a flat screen T.V.

I think it's a bad day when the union come out with this kind of thing, we don't even know if we will get our raise and Billy is taking it as a given that it is going to happen.fishtank wrote:DGP1 wrote:Lies, lies and statistics

Well maybe he knows something we don't, after all he is the titular head of the CWU and when he's having lunch or drinkies with the negotiators they probably let slip a titbit here and there.DGP1 wrote:I think it's a bad day when the union come out with this kind of thing, we don't even know if we will get our raise and Billy is taking it as a given that it is going to happen.fishtank wrote:DGP1 wrote:Lies, lies and statistics

Re: Pay freeze figures prove value of trade union membership
Wonder how much of an increase the union officials are getting this year - will it be in line with our increase, whatever it turns out to be or will it be 4% the same as the increase in subs - which arrived 4 months before our pay increase..............
It would be nice to see a little fiscal prudence from the CWU, perhaps claw back some of the money from cash rich branchs.

Re: Pay freeze figures prove value of trade union membership
Even if we get the 3.5% pay rise and it's a big IF. It will still be below inflation and a drop in wages in real terms. We also got nothing from the phantom shares (big surprise that one!
) which could be seen by many as a paycut as we were promised at least something and got Jack Sheet for them!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Re: Pay freeze figures prove value of trade union membership
Once again, Billy displays immaculate timing, telling us how brilliant & vital it is to be a member of a union, just before the Labour shadow chancellor publically backs Tory pay freezes on the union's public sector heartland! To paraphrase the Daily Wail's Richard Littledick "You just couldn't make it up....yet, it's completely believable"
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Re: Pay freeze figures prove value of trade union membership
what ever the rights and wrongs of our present deal and lack of pay rises for large parts of the union hayes general observation is right. its just bloody rich coming from a bloke on 100k, telling us how well were doing when obviousley we aint. our leadership is as much connected with us as the labour party is with its core supporters.

More like: workers part of a union wont get shafted quite as much, whilst the chief execs get half a million in bonuses whilst claiming theres no money and their 'success' places the business in th red.
