The letter will be no consolation to anyone who has had Direct Debits/Standing Orders declined & then being charged for the priviledge by their banks.

I am writing to thank you for your hard work towards the success of Royal Mail's Christmas operation. During the festive period, we handled around two billion Christmas cards, letters, packets and parcels. On some days, the huge volumes we were handling were twice as big as the average daily post bag during the rest of the year. It took a fantastic effort by all our people to deliver the nation's festive post bag and Royal Mail is very grateful to you for your contribution. Thank you sincerely. While the large majority of our temporary employees were paid correctly on time, we are keenly aware that for some people there were delays and difficulties with their pay. We are very sorry about this. Our temporary workers are very important to Royal Mail. If you experienced any difficulties in being paid, I want to thank you for your patience as well as the contribution you made to the Christmas operation.

We will be writing to you again with a final note summarising the hours you worked for Royal Mail, the pay you earned, and the deductions which were made for National Insurance and Income Tax.Meanwhile, many of our temporary people may now be applying for Job Seeker's Allowance after their period of Christmas Temporary Employment. We hope the information below will be useful to any "flexible"" workers being released from Angard contracts. We have confirmed with Jobcentre Plus that:

Any flexible workers being released from Angard that wish to make a benefits' claim should do so online at http://www.direct.gov.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and follow the links for Job Seeker's Allowance.

Jobcentre Plus does not insist on receiving a P45 when someone starts a claim and there is no
timescale by which an individual has to submit this form.

Jobcentre Plus does not insist on receiving a letter from the employer, particularly if the employer has been with Royal Mail or Angard, where significant numbers of individuals are returning to benefits after seasonal employment and rapid reclaim action is taken.

Just the latest in a long line of inept communications. They sent me and my son one each - and my son only worked one night! (He'd worked for a week back in September but they "oversubscribed" his night shift in November!)

I'm just filing this with the rest of the garbage for eventual recycling... totally disregarding it. It's meaningless and a waste of paper.

I got one too. They seem to care much more about how many parcels and letters they've handled over Christmas than apologising or explaining about lack of payment. Do they actually still believe it's a minority affected? This letter is a joke. They telling us how to sign on and wishing us the best for the future (which I would appreciate if I thought they actually meant it) - I've never been so patronised in my life. RM, I don't care how busy you were over Christmas or how much you "appreciate" our help. How about a long letter explaining exactly what went wrong with payment, followed by a sincere apology personally signed by an RM director?

If it's only a small minority affected they would never have sent everyone a letter! I'm sure a "small minority" have payroll problems every year but no letter is sent.

I was feeling quite left out that I hadn't received a letter from RM but it came just now

It's dated 6th Jan and written in the past tense as though they expected everyones pay issues to have been resolved by now -oh, dear, if only!

I was promised (as we all were) "by the latest 11th Jan" (so still 12 hours left)

I wonder if anyone else opened it with the attitude of "this isn't a payslip, and I bet it's not going to be a cheque in here" and just scanned it for two seconds before ignoring it. I could see perfectly well that it was flannel. What it is trying to do is isolate us, by telling everybody that their problems are rare. Except that we know better. Our trouble is that the government are Tory b*******s who don't give a damn about workers and there's no chance of seeing Angard punished. The Royal Mail through this fake stooge company Angard have stolen labour from people. I'm just waiting to see someone taking justice into their own hands.
