Late turns...

hey all. this has been on my brain the past week or so, so id thought id share this and see what peoples thoughts were. last week i got asked if i could help out on late turns once a week or so as they are really stuck for people at the moment. being the push over i am i said thats ok though aslong as i dont get put on a collection on a saturday as i barely get my one in 6 saturdays of as it is and dont wanna be running around late on a saturday afternoon. manager said thats ok as saturdays are covered.

in the back of my mind though instantly i was thinking i dont want to do late turns. i dont mind overtime in the mornings but i really dont wanna be doing late turns and collections. though for what ever dumb reason i said yes as i felt pressured.

im due to do a collection tomorrow night but as of yet ive done zero training on it or not been shown where im going. im still gonna go ahead with it tomorrow and just tell the manager i need training before i go out.

in the long term though i actually dont want to do these. i just want to do my contracted 25 hours a week, plus overtime in the morning if need be. deep down i want to say, sorry i cant do these late turns etc etc but as im a fixed term contract im worried they might not renew it next time round. though this is the 3rd time they renewed so they must like me atleast.

do i have to do these late turns? or is there a way i can see my union rep and get him to sort it out? could they say well we need late turns all time so now your 25 hours are in the evening? to be honest i dont even think there is 5 hours work in the evening to do anyway but....

You can say yes occasionally and you also can say no occasionally. Just make sure you don't say no everytime if you want overtime occasionally.

thing is overtime isnt essential. just if they need it in the mornings im willing. basically he said between now and april he needs help on late turns. tbh i dont mind the odd one in the week, but i know for a fact they will try it on and try and throw me on them near on every night.

if you gut feeling says "no", then be true to yourself and say "no", if you make a major mistake through lack of training, you can guarantee the managers will throw you to the wolves to cover their back, only say "yes" if you feel happy and confident in doing that job, if you don't have any training for a duty or route, ask for training and refuse to do that duty until they train you up, its your job that you must think of first, not pleasing people who will only be grateful for 10 minutes before moving on to the next victim.

Management are very fickle. Help them out and as has been mentioned they will remember it for about ten minutes. Refuse overtime or piss them off in any way and they remember it for life!
