I agree with Fishtank. Your primary job (and loyalty I presume) is to RM. Time to live in the real world and make a grown up decision about what job is more important, failing that, why not ask job 2 if you can start later because Royal Mail are being really really nasty and asking you to work the hours you get paid for. BTW, I presume that both employers know about both your jobs? You do have to declare another job to RM (and HMRC)

You're spot on there scl, my wife is a nurse and one of her colleagues worked at the hospital and also part time at a Nursing Home, cut a long story short she wasn't aware that not enough tax was being deducted and ended up owing HMRC over £2000

Come on Guys and Gals lets have a little more compassion here. We're talking about someone who's only trying to make a descent wage to live off, let's be honest can any family survive on P/T wages alone?? Perhaps our efforts would be better spent berating the union who as part of BT2010 they agreed an increase in full time jobs with RM, there would not be no need for second jobs to keep a families head above water if they set about ensuring what was agreed is implemented, instead of doing nothing other than producing a document telling us what we already know :no no :no no . I certainly wouldn't like to try and keep my family of just P/T wages, would you ?????

Absolutely not BUT there are decisions to be made as to which of the two jobs provides the most in terms of cash and security and which of the two should move the goalposts in order to accommodate the changes. I think it's a little unfair for anyone to assume that RM should make concessions which it may then have to provide to others to the detriment of the units efficiency.

There is a clause in your contract, at least in mine there is, which I can't remember word for word, but in essence it says that any other job outside of Royal Mail should not adversly affect your employment with RM.

Thats their get out clause.

when i started i had a p/t job in the afternoon -but in those days i was home by 9.30 -10.00 in the morning
when i was made f/t i gave up this job
a few years later when we had a 1.00 - 1.30 finish i opened a shop up an used to be able to do the afternoon shift no probs
but last year it got too much - i was finishing after 3 oclock and still had to do 4-6 hours to keep the place going
those days of 2 jobs are just about over now

I wasn't making a judgement call on how fair it was i was just giving the facts.
I apologise if it came across harshly but the fact is you can't expect any employer to care whether an agreed change in working practices adversely affects another employment.
You may get a local manager you have personal contact with to care sufficiently to do something unofficial, personally i doubt it...but asking the business to care officially or thinking that they can't do that?
I'm afraid not.

A F/T flat week isn't exactly a living wage these days though is it, £294, one trip to ASDA to feed a family of four basically takes care of half of it each week, I wish I had the energy to do a second job.

We've had guys with the same problem in our office post revision, and they have all had to make alternative arrangements or leave, some have left others have had to get wives to change hours for kids etc.

If you go to RM with the problem of being late for another job, don't expect a lot of understanding or willingness to co-operate

I feel for you Energie_man, we've been told as part-timers to start coming in later on a morning to cut down on overtime in the office. HOWEVER, full-timers are still getting to work their days off when there is cover (ME  ) for their duties which then causes me to be put on any old sh!t. Even when I do 'overtime' I still only average about 36 hours - only another 11 hours on top of my 25 week.

Energie_man, it's going to be hard working out where you'd be better off. Stay at RM as a P/T and you are likely to be shafted with no chance of any meaningful o/t, or is there any opportunities to increase your hours in the other job? If so I'd go for the latter.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Here we go again the old P/T v F/T :mad :mad :mad . We're all posties full stop !!!!!! You are being treated unfairly so DO SOMETHING..... Take the issue up with the office manager if you get no joy, Go to your rep if you get no joy, Go to the area rep if you get no joy, Go to division..... Put in a grievance but do something, nothing will alter by just grumbling on here, if you're being treated unfairly stand up and be counted !!!!!

Yes FT and others there is a lot of creditability in what you say but the flip side is that a lot of people come to RM because it fits into their lifestyle regarding times. I do understand times change but it's not too many years ago since we all finished at or before 12.30, now its 3 or even 4.00  . When you consider how RM champions themselves as being family friendly there's not much consideration for employees collecting children at 3.
When RM brought about the original changes in our office they, at a team brief asked anyone to come forward to whom the changes made life difficult be it child care, second job whatever, and they would make every effort to accommodate them, off the top of my head I think there were 15 put in hardship and asked for consideration...... they didn't accommodate one, not one and we lost 6 good posties all due to child care issues.....
If these constant time changes provided the customer with a better service or generated more profit, it would be easier to swallow, but as you well know the majority of customers are strongly against the later delivery, and it's hard to see the justification in later times as when they want to they are able to get the mail to the delivery office as early as they used to, proved every Saturday in our office......
Anyhow what about the season ticket holders on a Saturday afternoon as well LOL :whistle :whistle :whistle

Well I have to say that one mans predicament against a whole office work plan isn't going to cut much ice. As an employer RM has to be careful as to what allowances are made because once agreed as a special case then the next case could be deemed special et sequentia and before you know it the whole organistion would be running like Fred Karnos army.

Been there done that. Banging my head against a brick wall. :arrrghhh Union rep doesn't give a stuff. Grievance resulted in 'Well 25 hours is your contracted hours - what's your problem?' :d'oh!

Me sticking my head above the parapet only engages in return fire. I wanted full time hours when I joined and was told I would be made up in 6-12 months...............3 years later still 25 hours. Not easy to live on. Hard to get a second job to fit in. And yes my fellow full-timers also don't give a shi!t as they get any request to work their day off allowed, come in an hour earlier and book it, while I'm told to reduce my 'over' 25 hours time booked, and come in later, even though nothing has been prepped.

I'm trained on 19 duties now and always end up doing more than my fair share of bloody D2D's cos the F/T's 'don't have time'??!!

Funny you should mention season ticket holders.......one of my cover duties is one, always requests to work saturday when it's his long weekend off, runs round like fook so he can get to the match in time, never signs back in and claims his usual 8 hours o/t for 6 hours work.

P/T = sh!t hours, sh!t duties, sh!t holidays and general sh!t.
F/T = I'm alright Jack. *

* based on my 3 years experience at RM.

Yes, I know I'm lucky to have a job, but a level playing field would be nice.
