Hi, I'm currently working on the operations graduate scheme within the royal mail and am due to complete the scheme in July. Currently as of this July I will be out of work so I was looking to re-apply to a position within the company. As I can see it my background would make it best for me to apply to a position in a DO or a MC probably either as a DO manager or a shift manager in a mail centre.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to what would be good positions for me to apply to as these are the only ones I can think of but its a broad company and there might be other positions that I have not encountered in my training that would be good ones for me to apply to.

I would be tempted to say look outside of Royal Mail but there isn't much to look at.
Ops are overloaded at the moment and the only thing keeping the numbers up is the modernisation programme.
If/when that is completed there will obviously be a major cull.
Try following the current fads like Planning,World Class Mail and Indoor Flow....where there is bullshit flowing there are usually jobs for managers....no offence.
If you know the difference between pokayoke and muda you should be able to write your own ticket.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

But why would they have a graduate recruitment programme if they didn't have jobs for them at the end of it.
I thought the graduate programme was designed to give RM a more professional management base.

Ok it's very easy to be negative here but it's a new year and I'm trying to be more positive!
Graduate managers who turn up at RM without any experience of doing the grunt work tend to be full of big ideas and empty of common sense. By all means go for a managers job in deliveries, etc but please try and listen to the experienced staff below you if that's the route you choose and keep in mind that people are only human and have physical limits!
Respect the workers and they will respect you!

I thought if you are on the graduate scheme in a mail centre dont they just create a position for you at the end of it. You wont have to do anything they will do it all for you. You'd be expected to apply for anything that came up but if not just carry on.

You have no chance of a fulfilling career working for RMG management. You will be required to sell your principles as a human being for nothing in return.
It doesn't matter how good you are, a surplus manager will always get any vacancy that would have seen you promoted.
Your best bet is to try to get in at the bottom and work your way up through the Union structure. The CWU members are more likely to elect you into stimulating roles and reward your talent if you can bypass the Union dinosaurs who will try to block your nomination.

So £34,500+k over 18 months plus benefits,plus what it takes to run it and at the end of it no RM job,or he's got to go hunting for one!

Im pretty sure the graduates in the North East just carry on in their current roles and if they don't find anything else then that becomes their substantive role.

In reality Royal Mail,in a rush as usual fast tracks them rapidly beyond their capabilities resulting in a massive and messy fail at some point and a sideways move into obscurity....it's the Royal Mail way.
If Carlsberg did failure they would come to us for advice.
