if you have signed to say you have done the manual lifting refresher course in last three years you have shot yourself in the foot, part of the manual lifting course specifically states when your lifting something you first test the weight before lifting it of the ground,

On another note there is no "maximum" weight under h+s legislation, it is what you are capable of lifting without putting yourself at risk of injury, so 25kg or 16kg or even 5kg doesnt matter what counts is what you can lift comfortably and correctly

I did test the weight. It felt a bit heavy so I decided
to weigh it, more out of curiosity than anything else. The problem didnt happenstrictly becuse of the weight but the hook to attach the bag on was too thick fr the loops on the grey bag.so I had the bag in the air tryin to hook it on. As far as I can see ifolloewed maual lifting procedure I lifted the bag with bent knees, straight back
. When I lifted it I didnt know it was overweight.
It was that the scales werent fit for that purpose.
I didnt know that until too late. I had asked a senior member of staff where the scales were and he ointed me to the only ones left-the wall ones
Normally id weigh the bags safely on a york on the push onscales, but they were gone.
I wish I hadnt signed that Id had the manual lifting because im pretty sure that was about 5 years ago. But I also signed that id followed safe methods of manual handling, as did my manager.
Dosnt h & s at royal mail have max weights for things?
Its not even about the weight. I dont wanna get my manager in trouble for doin my bag.
For me the issue is that the correct equipment wasnt avaibible

If id just have lifted the bag onto floor scales it wud prob never have happened but the wall scales were the only ones available.
The hook on those scales is big. I had the bag in the air for what seemed like ages trying to get the loops over the hook. While im hookin it on using my right hand to try and slide the loops on, im having to hold the weight of the bag against the wall with my other hand.
My point being I didnt know those scales were unsuitable, and where were the ones that are suitable. Does royal mail have an obligation to provide scales to weigh trollies, yorks and sacks?
I thought the bag would just loop on the hook. I had no idea id stuggle and hurt myself.
Like Ive said before, I would have prob hurt myself with a lighter bag because the scales werent fit for that purpose, but I had no way of knowing that, and at the time I thought no alternative.

Id also finally like to state that when I filled in accident form as well as saying yes id done maual lifting, it was also put yes that id followed ssow (neither my manager or I really understood that and he put yes). Like an idiot I signed the form when it printed off but only 2 pages printed out of about 4. Anyway I did the signing bit at the bottom as did my manager. So he has signed that I folloed ssow.
This is becoming a nightmare for me. I feel so stressed as well as in pain.
I thought the bag was a bit heavy (not a bit overweight!) And I didnt realise it was over until I weighed it. And I hurt myself cause of the unsuitable scales.
Ive been lookin through h & s forum and it said sumone had been dismissed for not following ssow.
Did I follow ssow? I dont know. There was no safe way to weigh the bags really and no way of knowing they were over.
If id have weighed on prop scales I wud hav known they were over and broken bags down.
so taking all into consideration the business made it pretty impossible for myself and others to follow ssow. Someone please give me some good intelligent advice (that counts u out bitchface sorry)

Still dont seem to quite grasp it ,do you

you thought it heavy but instead of doing the safest and easiest thing you did the hardest.

thought process..

ohh thats heavy
i shall put some in another bag

job done safley

yours is
oh thats heavy
i bet its overweight
frickin scales have gone..arses
i know i shall lift it onto these scales ,the ones i know are not meant for the job

try taking some personal responsability.

and you are correct about stage warnings..i really dont know anything, because some of us have worked here years and never felt it neccesary to take a single day off work.that might be because i donot do stupid things though :nana

what do you mean some people never go sick because the dont do stupid things. What like
getting flu or the brad pitts or heaven forbid something worse. Are people stupid to get sick?

Also you make untrue and cynical assumptions.
I never thought 'I bet its overweight'! If Id thought or known that I wouldnt have lifted it. I weighed it out of curiosity.

Also I didnt know the scales werent suitable for sacks. Or Again I wouldnt have used them.

Since Ive been back on delivery Ive never had team brief, never been told that those scales were unsuitable for sacks.

Ur not helpful. Ur not even correct in what you say.

Maybe u do need some time off to fix your cynical, untrusting, condeseding sad little mind. Oh sorry your stuck with it-for life. I can log off the forum but ur stucvk with yourself and ur negetive thinking. unlucky bitchface.
If ur gonna try and help(ah-hem) at least get your facts right and stop making incorrect assumptions about what I thought. Ur no pyscholgist.

Funnily enough ive quite enjoy ed ur posts cause they break the bordem of sitting/lyin on the couch
Ur so cynical tho.
And really my assumptions are true arnt they? Ur not a pyschologist are you??
Whereas ur assuptions were wrong and plain cynical.

have you spoken to your health and safety rep, if your office does not have one you need to contact branch and get the area safety rep in

if this has happened to you then other people are in danger

the route cause analysis needs to be identified and delt with

work time learning will be an obvious route to begin with

this issue needs to be brought up and evasive action taken

the letter below is obvious thats it is a template. most line manager do not have the grey cells to compose such a letter so it must have come from HR

that is why i am taking a keen interest in this thread

ask your line manager for a copy of the erica report and get back to me

Ive got the erica report but it didn't print properly and only 2 pages printed.
So a lot of the info is missing.
It def stated I followed ssow.
I havnt reported to h & s.
Im worried that when it goes to hse they gonna find failings in business then my cards will be marked.
Im a workin mother with a mortgage and I need my job.
It scares me that people have been dissmissed following accident at work for not following procedures.
I just wish none of this mess had ever happened.
The stress and worry is even worse than the back pain.
I feel like crying.
