Woman's cancer treatment delayed...because Royal Mail stopped delivering letters

A WOMAN battling cancer missed the start of her radiotherapy treatment because Royal Mail stopped delivering letters to her home without telling her.
Barbara Kelly, 75, of Gowan Court, Benfleet, was due to start treatment for lung cancer on December 19, but her treatment has now been delayed until next month. Residents at the block in Gowan Close only became suspicious after no one received post for days.
Mrs Kelly’s daughter, Mary Rainforth, 43, of South View Road, Benfleet, discovered the extent of the problem when she checked with Southend Hospital staff about when her mother’s treatment was due to begin.
She said: “They said they were worried about mum because she should have been in to her appointment the day before.
“When she eventually got the mail there were four letters from Southend Hospital, dating back to December 12.”
Mrs Kelly beat the cancer after having part of her lung removed last year, but was dealt a blow when it returned in November. Her radiotherapy treatment has now been pushed back until January.
Mrs Rainforth said both she and the Gowan Court warden had been in touch with Royal Mail’s sorting office in Church Road, Thundersley, but had received no explanation.
She said: “They didn’t say why. They just said they would look into it.
“One of the postmen overheard the conversation, and after he finished his own deliveries he went around, found everyone’s mail and delivered it.
“I wish I knew his name to thank him.”
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said there had been a problem with getting access to the sheltered housing complex, but this has now been resolved.
She said: “We are concerned to hear customers in Gowan Court have not been receiving the high level service they expect from Royal Mail, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
“This was due to an issue with gaining access to the premises, which is via entry code.
“Royal Mail is delivering mail to all residents in Gowan Court, and we will continue to monitor this closely.”
They have urged any customers experiencing mail delays to contact the customer service department on 08457 740740.
Royal Mail provoked outrage when it stopped delivering to homes in unmade roads across Benfleet in the autumn, claiming it was too dangerous for postal staff to complete their rounds.
However, the company bowed to public pressure and delivers to all but six homes in the town.

Although most of the sheltered housing have codes they are normally kept inside the head of the duty holder, nowhere are they kept written downkawoxux wrote:Probabaly someone on cover who couldnt be arsed to look up the codes.

... or someone on cover who was NOT TOLD the codes - no doubt the walk log is a pile of poo (because the regular can't be *rsed to keep it up to date) - and usually no f*cker tells a floater anything anyway - or leaves keys/key fobs etc etc ...
Nice try full-time regular walk person (I'm guessing) !!!

Our walk logs were kept up to date, but some of our sheltered accommodation had trade buttons (and/or codes) that were on timers that went off at 11am or something. If no one answered their buzzer, we couldn't get in and couldn't deliver the mail.
Does this rag smell of chloroform to you?

Funny how Benfleet keeps popping up in the news.
Don't think anyone outside of South Essex had heard of it prior to Park & Loop!

Exactly what I was thinking. Wonder how long the DOM is going to last with all these complaints before he/she gets promoted.cyclemech1 wrote:Funny how Benfleet keeps popping up in the news.
