Holiday pay - claim it now!

Post by mountain breeze »

Just to let you all know that I spoke to Angard today and raised the concerns about holiday pay. Many still waiting for original pay so what chance of holiday pay?
Was told by the female staff member that it would come through automatically - I didn’t need to apply. She had just checked for another casual with the same concerns. A manager there at Angard had advised her.
I had no confidence in this, as communication within Angard and to us continues to be awful. I should point out that so far all 3 weeks wages have been paid into my bank account. The right tax code and the right number of hours. I even did an extra 4 hours on 5 occasions and they got this right. So they can do it!
I was about to e-mail them at angard.holiday@reedglobal.com when my phone rang and the blocked number turned out to be Angard offering me another temporary job in my area. I declined this again (as I have done for full-time permanent work with RM this year and last - offered to me by RM staff) as I would like to be off Angard’s books ASAP. I requested my holiday pay and a P45 with my correct tax code on it. The guy said he would do this for me there and then. I don’t consider myself pessimistic but just to be sure I e-mailed them as well on the above explaining it should have been sorted out but just in case. I gave work location, reference number …. infact all the details I could.
I even got an e-mail reply just before 5pm this evening saying I would be getting the holiday pay this coming Friday and then they would request a P45 to be sent.
I mentioned my concern that holiday had to be claimed before 31st December or it would be lost and that I understood all holiday entitlement had to be claimed - it wouldn’t just happen. Neither point was addressed.
I know most people writing on here have still to receive correct weekly payments but make sure when the opportunity arises you do get all holiday pay too. I have received 2 wage slips so far - not bad considering we all know what the postal system is like these days! The amount is shown on these.
I strongly suspect for many these are still early days - almost the beginning. It will take them months to sort everybody out. Holiday pay has been a legal requirement from agencies for many years now. Make sure you press for it.
I also received the text message stating “no issues (of pay) are able to be rectified at Royal Mail Sites". Again, I strongly suspected this was going to be the case. This was why - exactly why - I had a meeting with a manager whilst I was still working ……. at Chelmsford. I was given the assurances I was seeking. We were not going to be left in isolation and having to battle with an agency that was so difficult to contact. However, this message now totally contradicts what I was told. To be honest I was also asked to speak to this manager - others were either unwilling, lazy or were casuals where English was not their first language.
I havn’t phoned to confirm this as I don’t need to. My situation is fine. However, the point is that having done the work for 3 weeks RM are washing their hands of the Christmas staff and now it is going to be a solitary struggle for all those trying to get the pay they are due.
This message has to have been a national decision. I would be surprised if any individual RM centres buck the trend. No more cash handouts mean everyone has to do battle themselves. I anticipate more television interviews. As I said in my previous post if I was a senior manager where I had worked and have received not one thank you for the efforts to pay cash to those staff who had not been paid by Angard, I would have felt like saying no more. One of the chief benefactors of the £350 cash hand-out had still chosen to complain to the TV cameras. They helped her and in return she chose to kick them in the teeth.
If I was still working I would certainly be seeking another meeting. It is remains a distinct possibility that the £350 was merely a stalling tactic. The timing of it is interesting. It meant there would be just enough delay to reach the finishing post, by which time the bulk of the Christmas work would have been completed. We would have all served our purpose. At that point a natural handing over to Angard would seem an obvious outcome.
I hope some of the above may be useful to those who are still waiting for payments. Don’t give up!
Remember - trust no-one, believe nothing and always ………. always carry your camera!

What do you mean by holiday pay? I also got a pay slip yesterday and it said holiday accrued, 5. something I think but I don't know what it is tbh and what I'd need to do about it. This is my first proper job so I have no idea about paying tax and reclaiming it! I do know I should be able to claim all the tax back but not sure how/when

Holiday pay is shown on the top right of your pay slip. The rate of pay is exactly the same hourly rate that you have been working at.
If the holiday hours accrued show 5 then you are entitled to have 5 hours at your hourly rate. On the next pay slip, assuming oyu have worked more hours, you will see that the rate of pay stays the same but the hours accrued have gone up.
Once you have all your pay slips you will see the total holiday pay you should receive. You are legally entitled to this.
Make sure you e-mail Angard at the address I have given. The pay should come through on the next Friday after they arrange it.
I posted my message to try and get all those who have been paid in full to press at the earliest opportunity to get their holiday pay. I wouldn't advise delaying doing this.
Tax issues are normally no fun at all, but compared to the problems of pay with Angard, they will seem like a stroll in the park.
Any tax deducted is shown under income tax deductions. Some people have been taxed at the correct code, others have not. If the amount of tax you have paid is too much or you should not have been deducted any tax, then you can claim this back.
If this will be your only job in this tax year or you are a student you should be able to claim any tax paid before then of the tax year - April 5th 2012. In practise, whatever your circumstances, it is normally easier to do this after April 5th.
Not sure which tax office is dealing with Angard pay but perhaps another casual has this information. We should be able to find this out, however.
Good luck!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
