Postmen are relatively well paid for the job that they do, other workers depend on their tips to make up their wages. In my experience it was generally the older generation that did tip the postman. As for the postman trying extra hard to leave the parcel somewhere safe, I used to do that too,but my main reason was to get rid of the packet and not have to shut the packet at a post office. There is a recession on, any tips should always be gratefully received and looked upon as a pleasant bonus.
Does anybody declare their tips for tax purposes?

You also don,t see MC staff delivering mail in horrendous weather conditions which includes the extremes of weather in the summer also. Most people who give tips, do so because they see their postman battling the weather conditions but remaining polite and helpful at the same time. No, we have no god given right to be tipped, and if a postie differentiates between a tipper and non tipper in respect of the provision of service, then he does not deserve to be tipped. The public do have a right to a good service, but unfortunately that service level has been denigrated by successive governments and a board of directors who have two aspirations. The first to privatise the Royal Mail and the second to earn as much as they can in doing the governments dirty work. Do not blame postmen for the caving in of service levels. This is being perpetrated directly from board level.

you may not c m/c staff working outside in horrendous weather but in the summer time we r sweating our arses off inside while u r enjoying the lovely warm weather outside so it works both ways lol ....... . and as for blaming postman on the level of service i don't but it doesn't hurt for the postie to be polite and have a smile on his/her face instead of holding his hand out waiting for a tip as u quite seem to think is right !!! don't forget we r still royal mail not a hair dresser or a cab driver who relies on there tips if a customer wishes to give u a tip fair enough but don't expect it !!! me and u have a difference opinion so we will have to agree to disagree.....on this one : : :arrrghhh

It is clear you have no idea of what a postmans job is like. I have, and I believe 99.9% of posties have never held out our hands begging for a tip, if I am tipped then I appreciate the gesture but I would not beg for such a thing. And you don't fool me with your silly comment about sweating your arses off in a mail centre, I used to work in one, and trust me the air conditioning you have is a lot nicer than the 80mph wind, pelting rain, snow, freezing cold and blaring sun that us posties have to deal with. Lets face it a mail centre worker is in effect a glorified office worker, with very little hard physical work required, like I said I know because I used to work as one. Spend a week as a postie at Xmass and you will see what utter rubbish your view of posties is.

mg, the heat inside that mc you work in must be effecting your reading. Where did I say it was alright for a postman to hold his hand out for a tip. On the contrary I said it was not a god given right to receive tips

Had a real laugh at your cheap shot at us frontline posties MG.As the old saying goes "Don't knock it till you've tried it"unless of cours you were a postie at one time and decided a cushier job inside too avoid the ever more physical and mentality demand.End of..... :speak to the hand

Thrilled to bits with my £220+ box of chocolates and a bottle of wine... still rolling in now with £10 today. Best of the bunch was two fifty pence pieces from an old lady. Not often these days when acts of kindness benefit me. The service I/we provide meant something to her and many others like her. I'd guess that junk mail 250 days of the year isn't what I was getting tipped for and nor was it the remaining hundred days when I delivered post of use. It's great to be a part of the community actually a rare privilege. Yes it's a pathetic place of employment RM. But to some customers it means a hell of a lot. But you all knew that already.

I think if you asked every postie what their major complaint with RM was very few would pick pay.
We're not rolling in it but it's a decent (full-time)wage for what is in all honesty unskilled labour.
Take a look in the job centre if you don't believe me.
If i had a gripe i would want more of it in basic and shared out more evenly with less stupid allowances....especially for long since defunct roles.

MG,i think yourself is the need to smile as it was you started moaning the first place:
You stated that most posties can speak little English. On that comment itself in my office we have lots of Polish posties and i'll vouch for them as excellent workers, real grafters.
letters posted in wrong letterbox you say as well.Well tell me who has never done that before. In fact i may have done it recently without noticing,as after all we are only human.
Get yourself out more MG,preferably with a bag on your shoulder, and with a smile as you say :Very Happy
