Monmouth's Singing Postman raises thousands for charity

MONMOUTH'S singing postman has raised thousands for charity and is worthy of the Community Champion title as he brings a smile to people's faces as he delivers their post.

Paul Northey, 52, has had a varied career working in the royal engineers and as a training consultant before taking up the job as a postman, but none of these give him the satisfaction as getting up on a stage and singing to an audience.

Mr Northey, who fits singing around his already busy lifestyle, said: "I look after my dad who has Alzheimer's, and being a postman is my day job, but I enjoy singing as a hobby.

"I found that I'm quite a good impersonator so I started my own business called Mr Paul karaoke cabaret and using costumes I cover people like Sinatra, Robby Williams and Elvis."

He adds a bit of fun to his gigs by asking the audience to challenge him to impersonate their favourite singers.

Mr Northey explained that as well as doing events for money, over the years he has helped to raise thousands for charity by performing for free for charity events.

Mr Northey's singing talents often over spill into his day job as a postman. This year he raised £100 for Children in Need by wearing his Elvis wig while delivering letters, and as his reputation as a singer has grown he has even been asked to sing Happy Birthday to people while delivering their cards.

As singing was something that Mr Northey picked up in his late 30's, he isn't a professionally trained singer and practices in him spare time.

But he hopes that one day he can fulfill his dream of performing with an orchestra and recording it.

He said: "I can sing deep but also I can sing in a more operatic style, and I would like to perform with an orchestra.

"It's just finding the time and mixing it with my day job, but I just love to sing and I'm willing to put the effort in to make it happen. You never know members of an orchestra might read this and want to help me fulfill my dream "
