Temporary postal staff walk out in row over pay

Temporary postal workers at a Mallusk sorting office have been told wages cannot be guaranteed by Christmas, according to staff.

Catherine Hardy from Glengormley started work on 30 November.

She said she and two other workers walked out on Tuesday after a senior manager claimed that payment before Christmas was uncertain.

In a statement, Royal Mail said the vast majority of temporary workers had been paid on time.

"The small minority of our temporary workers who were regrettably not paid on time or by the correct amount have now been paid," it said.

Ms Hardy said staff were due to get paid weekly and the pay delay has affected a significant number of staff.

"Myself, along with at least 100 other temporary employees found that after several weeks of working, no-one was receiving payments," she said.

"We just weren't getting paid for the work. This is a sham."

The temporary employment contracts are handled through Angard Staffing, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Mail.

Royal Mail has apologised for any difficulties caused to the minority who did not receive their pay on time.

"We have taken action in every single case that we are aware of to ensure a payment has been made," it said.

"In some cases, we have done this by issuing a voucher which can be cashed at any Post Office branch."

Ms Hardy said that Royal Mail's management in Mallusk did issue a barcode to those who had received no payment which could be cashed at the post office.

She claimed this was for £350, a sum much lower than what she was owed.

Temporary postal workers across the UK have been experiencing similar problems over pay.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

there is a simple answer no contract staff
no casuals
no temporary staff
no part-time staff

no revisions should be agreed until all dutys are full-time all you hear about is how royal mail
taking the piss out of these above staff it is not fair to any of them.
you cannot get much lower in a business than not to pay someone on-time.
our union needs to act now in getting full-time staff into full-time work not trying to help a corrupt govement
in there unemployment figures

Looking at it............and I'm sure they have written a sternly worded letter (that's our subs at work  ).

And as for them not being in the union and not deserving any help................if RM can get away with this on the casuals then how long before they try it on with the rest of us??

I want them to butt in and as loudly and as forthrightly as possible.

Why you may ask.

Well Angard has shown us many things.

How much Royal Mail would really like to pay us per hour.
That Royal Mail want to give us only slightly better than the minimal number of breaks.
That Royal Mail don't want us to be paid when we are on break.
That Royal Mail want regional pay.
That Royal Mail want a pool of workers that can work as and when needed with minimal notice.
That Royal Mail will always try to downplay personnel problems.
That Royal Mail cant cope with an influx of 18,000 into their pay roll system (how nervous should we be when monthly pay rears its head again)
That Royal Mail don't see communication with their employees as an important factor.
That Royal Mail rely on local management to a very great deal to sort out problems, meaning an uncoordinated and unfair approach to people and problems.

Whilst I understand your position, I think to be honest its short-sighted, after all just change the above statements from Royal Mail to Angard and you can see everything I have said has happened only recently.

To be fair, most of that isn't much of a surprise is it? It's been known for a while, to most who care to lift their heads out of the sand for long enough anyway, that RM are looking to screw over the permanent staff as soon as they possibly can. And we all know that for a communications business, their internal communication with their staff is absolutely shocking. There's a lot to be said for honesty. It might piss people off, but it'll gain you respect and that's what RM have lost from their staff.
