I am working as a casual in a DO. I do exactly the same as the permanent staff. Go in, sort my mail, do my round, do any thing else that needs doing then go home. Everyone does the same.

We've one in my DO and she has'nt been paid for 3 weeks, total f***ing shambles.
I suggest those who think we are a bunch of shirkers should do their research before making comments and not tar all RM staff with the same brush. Everywhere has people who want to do as little as possible but as was said previously, if we don't do the work in deliveries it won't get done. :cuppa

I'm the only casual in my DO. It's not where I was originally meant to be, but I was not needed where Angard sent me and I got redirected. I'm glad I did, being the only one means my hard work actually gets noticed.

this ugly topic again??!! 99% of royal mail workers are dedicated hard working people. what you see in mail centres are MANAGEMENT failings to work under pressure. who do you think performs these tasks when casuals are not there? i work in a mail centre and every xmas postmen are taken off the jobs they perform all year round and replaced by casuals. MANAGEMENT think this is a master stroke because they can then use the posties knowledge and experience in other areas. what you then have is casuals having to be shown how to do the posties job which wastes time and resources, the postie is then free to roam the mail centre because MANAGEMENT dont know how to use that knowledge and experience. dont skin me here but in my opinion there are too many casuals in mail centres because MANAGEMENT dont know how to use the manpower at their disposal. yes there are some lazy lazy feckers but again this is down to MANAGEMENTs failings and yes more casuals should be employed at delivery offices but this would be a sensible approach and royal fail just dont do sensible

And a very worrying thing.
If there is a vacancy in the DO, why isn't it being filled?
Perhaps they are about to have a revision and the vacancy won't be there for long. Perhaps.
Or maybe they figure it is easier/cheaper to fill the vacancy with a minimum wage casual instead of a permanent member of staff.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

At the moment I'm covering the round of someone on sick leave. My DOM has told me that he will need me after Christmas as he struggles to cover leave, sickness etc. Personally, I wouldn't stay on unless there was an RM contract in it. But I'm sure they could find other casuals if they wanted to, so you're probably right to be worried.
The permanent staff I work with don't seem to see that the development of Angard affects all RM staff.

No.The polar bear isn't actually in the picture. That polar bear is actually in a specially built unit in Holland.

Please don't tar all Royal Mail workers with the lazy sticker it is way off the boundary mark, you of course can remark on factual or truth as long as you have statements, photos all made by legit people, you may of course comment if you have been abused by the company for as long as most of us have been on the company which is longer than 5 minutes or you can go out on 670 drop delivery with 11 bags and see if you can get back in under 6hours then call us lazy if you like but in my small career of 20blibdy bob or so years on the good ship Royal Mail i have met some very lazy casual members of staff who believe the world and his auntie owes them a living. i have also met some lazy postal staff but in general most of us give our hearts and souls to the company and have stood on picket lines to make your 5 minutes of wonder in RM possible so please refrain from calling us or generalizing about what we are supposedly,Thank you for your patience normal services will now resume :Very Happy

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I have great sympathy for any casual that has not received their pay let me make that clear

but for someone to come on here and call ALL RM staff lazy?

and this is directed at the OP and the OP only

you have probably done what 2/3 weeks work in a mail centre?

don't you dare tar all RM workers that are out in all weathers week in week out 52 weeks a year with the same brush

you may have come across some lazy peeps but they are everywhere

come work with me, everyday for a year and lets see if it changes your perspective about us ALL being lazy

arrghhh rant over

Just to redress the balance, right with you guys. There's nothing quite like a sweeping generalisation to get peoples backs up. Just another case of sloppy thinking and people are always ready to criticise rather than praise. Hence the reason for the supposed need to slate the lazy workers and yet not praise the grafters. Sad.
My own findings after 3 weeks casual work at Birmingham is that most of the regulars are approachable and helpful and pull their weight, though I've not paid that much attention to other peoples role, I just get stuck into my own. The odd exception naturally but that's par for the course. I've enjoyed working for Royal Mail and sincerely hope that my application to be a postie is successful.
