A 27-year-old former Oldbury postman has been warned he could be facing time behind bars after he admitted stashing over 5,000 items of undelivered mail in the boot of his car.
Shane Sohanpal pleaded guilty to delaying mail and he was remanded on bail until January 25th for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
The charge against Sohanpal of Oldacre Road, Oldbury - he lost his job when the offence came to light - involves 2,819 letters and 2,346 other postal packets.
Mr Stephen Blower defending told Wolverhampton Crown Court that Sohanpal, a man of previous good character, accepted he was clearly at risk of losing his liberty.
Judge John Wait, ordering the remand, said he was not prepared to give any indication as to the sentence Sohanpal would receive when he returned to the court.

Well that's why I'm asking. It doesn't say that the mail was opened/tampered with, just hoarded. And 5000 items isn't a huge amount in hoarding standards (I'm thinking of the garage fulls etc). So I'm just wondering why he's done it?!DGP1 wrote:Too much work, not enough timeTeeferTiger wrote:Any reason given as to why he was hoarding the mail?!

I presume half of the hoard was D2D.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Probably most of the 'haul' but why let details get in the way of a sensational story.clashcityrocker wrote:I presume half of the hoard was D2D.

"Lazy" Oldbury postman stashed away thousands of items of mail http://www.halesowennews.co.uk/news/949 ... s_of_mail/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
AN Oldbury postman stashed more than 5,000 items of mail because he was too lazy to push it through letterboxes, a court heard.
A total of 2,819 letters including giros, cheques, bank cards, passports and airline tickets were hidden by Shane Sohanpal in his bedroom and car.
He also hung onto 2,346 items of junk mail telling post office investigators: "It all started getting a bit too much for me."
John Dove, prosecuting, said Sohanpal, of Oldacre Road, went on to acknowledge it "might simply have been because he was too lazy."
The 27-year-old admitted at Wolverhampton Crown Court intentionally delaying mail and was sentenced to six months in jail suspended for 18 months and ordered to carry out 100 hours community punishment.
He was further placed on supervision for six months, ordered to pay £500 costs and £167 compensation to the Post Office.
Mr Dove said an investigation was launched after complaints from customers on Sohanpal's round about their post not being delivered.
Two test packages were put into his delivery sack and he was kept under surveillance.
He was seen to deliver the packages but completely ignore a block of flats - Astbury Court in Oldbury containing 20 homes and it was then that investigators went to his home.
They discovered the undelivered items hidden underneath Sohanpal's bed and in his car and some of them were up to four weeks old.
Sarah Hurd, defending, said Sohanpal had resigned from the position he held as a postman for five months and he wanted to apologise to all the residents whose postal deliveries had been hit.
