PAYROLL problems for Royal Mail temporary staff have taken another twist after a Derby man was paid for work he did not do.

Ben Newsome, 20, has received £128.55 from the company. But despite being successful with his application, he had decided not to work for Royal Mail as a Christmas temp at its Midland Road sorting office.

He said this was because he had concerns about the agency they were using for recruitment.

This firm is called Angard Staffing Solutions, an employment agency owned by Royal Mail Group, which was set up earlier this year to handle the postal service's temporary workforce requirements.

Mr Newsome said: "I was a bit surprised when I checked my bank account. I've not got in touch with them yet but I presume they know what they've done and I'll let them know in a few days if it's still there.

"I decided not to work for them because Angard kept messing me about with what times I would be working.

"First they said 6pm to 10pm, then I got a letter saying 10pm to 6am, which I couldn't do."

Mr Newsome, of Speedwell Close, Oakwood, said he had received cash for 30 hours of work that he believed had probably been due to a temporary worker.

He said: "I feel sorry for those who have been affected by this."

Hundreds of Royal Mail temporary staff across the country were not paid on time last week.

Sharon Dean, 42, of Alvaston, has taken Christmas shifts at the Midland Road site and was among those who missed out. She said she had stopped going in to work because she had still not been paid.

Mrs Dean said: "What has happened to Mr Newsome doesn't surprise me. I've also heard of people being paid incorrect amounts. It's been mismanaged."

In response to Mr New-some's case, a Royal Mail spokesman said: "We have experienced difficulties with the payroll system.

"We are working with our external supplier to resolve these issues as soon as possible.

"These issues will be investigated thoroughly including any individual who received payment from Royal Mail but was ineligible to do so."

It is understood that Mr Newsome's payment is the only one of its kind of which the company is aware.

Royal Mail said it was taking steps to get the money to its temporary workers.

He said they were yesterday due to get vouchers which they could cash in for pay at any Post Office branch.

The spokesman said: "The vast majority of our temporary Christmas workers were paid on time last week."

There are 118 temporary staff working at the Derby sorting office.

The spokesman said he could not give a figure for how many had not been paid on time but it is understood there are hundreds across the country.
