DETECTIVES are hunting two masked men who burst into a busy post office wielding a gun and an axe in Hampton in Arden.

The postmaster was left with a fractured jaw and other facial injuries after a scuffle broke out at the post office in Hampton in Arden on Monday morning.

At about 9.10am two men walked into the post office and threatened the postmaster and demanded he open the safe.

When he refused, the 58-year-old was attacked by the would-be thieves.

Detective Constable David Bailey, of West Midlands Police, said: “This was a particularly nasty robbery, where these offenders have left a man, in his 50s, with a fractured jaw and other facial injuries.

“The post office was busy with customers at the time of the offence and they were also threatened by the armed men.

“Due to the postmaster bravely trying to fight off the offenders while also raising the alarm, they eventually fled empty-handed.

“We want to speak to anyone who may have seen them arrive in the area, or escape from the scene following the robbery.”

The men are believed to have used a silver Seat Leon during the incident and were seen driving away from the scene along Marsh Lane.

Both men were wearing dark clothing. One had an orange bag over his shoulder, and they both wore masks or balaclavas. One man was white, about 5ft 10in tall and in his 20s. The other man was of mixed race.
