Royal Mail takes emergency steps to pay temp workers

As payment problems continue for some temporary workers at the Royal Mail, the postal organization has told Recruiter that it has put in place “additional payment channels” to ensure that workers are paid.

The emergency measures being taken include “staff receiving either a cash payment or a voucher which can then be redeemed for the relevant amount of cash at any Post Office branch,” a Royal Mail spokesman told Recruiter. “In some cases, we have overpaid people in order to expedite payments. We will, of course, be making appropriate adjustments in future payments.”

“Firm action is being taken to resolve outstanding pay issues,” the spokesman emphasised. “The vast majority of our Christmas temporary recruits have been paid as usual into their bank accounts. Where this was not possible, we have made huge efforts to put in place additional payment channels.”

He added, “We apologise for the difficulties that this situation has caused to a minority of our temporary workers. We are determined to ensure that staff receive their correct pay as soon as possible.”

In a separate statement, Reed, a provider of a number of recruitment services to Royal Mail confirmed that “a minority of staff” were not paid last Friday. “We have worked very hard over the weekend to ensure that this is rectified as soon as possible.”

Last Friday marked the second pay date that some of the Royal Mail’s temporary seasonal workers had problems with pay such as under or non-payment.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I got the following standard "apology" from a Royal Mail bigwig for non-payment of wages owed - but still no cash in my bank account - and no reply to the email I sent to Angard on Friday afternoon (16 December).

I suggest any aggrieved unpaid workers make their feelings known robustly to Mr Redmond of Royal Mail - his email address is in the "apology" that follows below: :evil/mad

Dear Mr xxxxxxxxx

I am sorry that there has been some difficulties with the payroll system and I apologise that you have not been paid on time.

Our temporary Christmas staff are very important to Royal Mail and we have put in a huge effort to ensuring that they are paid on time. The majority of our Christmas temporary recruits will be paid on time through a transfer into their bank accounts.

Where this is not possible, we are making huge efforts to put in place an additional payment channel. This involves staff receiving a barcoded letter which can then be exchanged at any Post Office branch for the relevant amount of cash. I am very sorry if this payment method causes any additional inconvenience.

We are committed to doing everything we can to resolving any outstanding pay issues as soon as possible.

Kind Regards

Gary Redmond

That apology is basically the same bulls**t statement they've quoted to every news website.

I got the same letter emailed from ''justsayit'' following an email I wrote to Moya Greene. The only difference is that someone must have realised that you don't has difficulties, you have difficulties, and they'd changed it into coherent English.

How can they say that they've made a ''huge effort to ensuring that [we] are paid correctly?'' I don't know any Angered workers who've been paid correctly so they self-evidently haven't ensured anything. Shoddy, dishonest English that betrays a shoddy, dishonest management.

This seems to be a concerted effort by management of both RM and Angard to minimise
the bad press they are getting.
There does not seem to be a great deal of effort to contact personnel that have been employed
on a temp basis. My details have been in there domain since 23rd October 2011. I commenced
employment with them on 1st December 2011, I have not received any payment from them at all!
I am unable to contact them by phone "due to high volume of calls we are unable to answer you", I have
had no response from e-mails other than auto response to show receipt of my e-mail. I quit this deplorable
excuse for a company after 2 expected paydays that did not materialise. Christmas will be a non-
event in my house this year, Thank you Angard and RM for the greatest disappointment I have
experienced in many a good year!!!
