Thieving postie gets jail

A postman who stole more than £3,000 from residents on his round in Barton, Oxford, was todayfri starting a two-and-a-half year jail sentence.

Rotimi Ayeni, 37, applied for a job with the Royal Mail in Oxford in 2004 using false identification stolen from a Dutch man.

Over his eight months as a postman, Ayeni stole at least five credit cards, as well as store cards and a cheque book from homes on his round.

The father-of-one wept profusely throughout yesterday's hearing at Reading Crown Court.

Ayeni was found guilty in March of stealing more than £1,250 in credit cards.

He also deposited £1,750 in a bank account using a stolen cheque.

Mustapha Hakme, defending, said the 89 days Ayeni had already spent in custody had taught him a lesson, and he was now on medication for depression.

Jailing him, Judge Mary Jane Mowat said: "To steal credit cards from the mail and to put them to use and obtain goods, cash and services with them is extremely serious.

"If you cannot trust the mail then what can you trust?"

Mystery of the lost cheques

MYSTERY still surrounds the 'missing' 1,200 council tax cheques.
Eastbourne residents had been threatened with legal action after a bundle of cheques went missing en route to a processing company in Witney, Oxfordshire.

Because the money was not received by Eastbourne Borough Council, an automated system sent out letters last week demanding that payments be made immediately or residents would be taken to court.

The Royal Mail maintains it tried to deliver the cheques but the post was 'refused' at the Oxfordshire processing business.

However, the business maintains that it is impossible to 'refuse' post — and that Royal Mail is to blame for failing to deliver post dating back weeks.

A Royal Mail spokesman said, "Following our investigations we can confirm that, as previously stated, there were no delays in our system and the mail was delivered correctly and on time, but that the company in Witney declined to take them and returned them to our delivery office locally".

However, the response handling manager for the Oxfordshire company, which deals with plenty of high profile customers, categorically denied it was responsible for any delayed cheques — and saidthat no mail had been refused.

"It is impossible for us to refuse delivery of items of post. We have contacted Royal Mail and are waiting for an explanation. I want it to retract its blame of us.

"I feel very sorry for the council — it has done nothing wrong either. It is a debacle. I am furious."

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesman said this week, "The council has written a letter of explanation to more than 1,200 taxpayers affected by the postal delay expressing its regret at the inconvenience and any anxiety caused.

"Both the council and its processing partner have been pressing Royal Mail to ensure that such a delay does not happen again and we are monitoring the position on a daily basis.

"The council is waiting to receive written details from Royal Mail of the outcome of its internal investigation before it decides how best to proceed."
