A woman who died in hospital after being found injured in a flat had been stabbed several times, police have said.
Officers forced their way into the block on Cromwell Road, Poole, Dorset, on Sunday afternoon after a neighbour reported hearing screams for help.
A post-mortem examination showed she had multiple stab and incision wounds.
Officers are continuing to question a 40-year-old man, thought to have known the victim, on suspicion of murder.
'Sounded distressed'
Neighbour Alastair Forsyth said: "I could hear someone saying 'Stop that, stop that'. She sounded distressed so I went into the road and shouted at the house was there a problem, did they need any help, and the answer came back 'Call the police', which I did."
He said he then took the woman's daughters, two aged four and a seven-year-old, inside his house for protection.
"My wife and I looked after the children while the police and other services dealt with it," Mr Forsyth said.
The injured woman was taken to Poole Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Det Ch Insp John Crossland, head of Dorset Police's major crime investigation team, said the arrested man is from the Poole area.
He said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
