Royal Mail fails to deliver to Hade Edge man’s house because flagstones are ‘too dangerous’

http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/local-we ... get-bottom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

FROM biting dogs to biting winds, posties face all kinds of hazards in the line of duty.

But Royal Mail has refused to deliver Don Booth’s post because the few flagstones on the flat ground outside his front door have been judged ‘too dangerous’.

For the last five weeks Don, of Hade Edge, has been forced to make four-mile round trips to Holmfirth Post Office to collect his mail.

And even in dry weather Royal Mail has refused to deliver to his house on Dunford Road, although his letterbox can be reached without stepping on the flagstones.

Mr Booth, a management consultant, has branded the company ‘jobsworths’.

Don, 61, said: “They can’t even deliver me a note to say they’ve been.

“There’s three square yards of flagstones next to my porch. They do get slippery in wet weather, but they won’t deliver in dry weather. One of the postmen I spoke to thought this was stupid.

“I had to ring the post office after I hadn’t had any post for 10 days and I was told that the flags were too slippery.

“I’ve even thought of inviting the manager to come to my house and make an assessment.

“Either they’re jobsworths or someone’s playing the health and safety game.

“If they’re going to take this stance they might as well rule out half the properties in Holme Valley.”

Mr Booth added: “Five years ago they left a parcel for me – a £65 pair of running shoes – in my bin and it got thrown away by the binmen. I’m not right pleased with Royal Mail.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail delivers to almost 29 million addresses across the UK and so it is always a last resort if we decide not to deliver to a specific area.

“The safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries if the safety of our postmen and women is at risk.

“In this particular case, we have reluctantly decided to suspend deliveries to an address in Hade Edge as our staff have been faced with dangerous conditions on occasions due to the state of the pavement.

“We apologise to the customer affected by this temporary suspension and we are keen to resume deliveries as soon as possible.”

I've got sympathy with guy, don't deliver to some old codger but we'll send you out in red alert wind levels, 10 inch of snow. And we expect you not to have an issues.
Maybe the guys stones are a joke. But so is Royal Mail.

So is he aware of the stresses and strains that he is placing on his back by positioning himself in that manner? I doubt it, because if he was, he wouldn't do it.

I'm not saying that as a postie (because I'm not one anymore), I'm saying it as a first aider trained in manual handling with St John Ambulance.

However, RM management should go out to the address to review the situation and make arrangements for the post, not just leave it as it is. However, as per usual, it's the posties that are left to be seen as jobsworths and lazy rather than following instructions which could ultimately save them from losing their jobs should they actually have an accident

A number of properties that have block paving and certain type of Tiles can be well slippery in wet conditions ,like being on a ice rink ,if it is slippery for us equaly so for any one else, definatley a problem.

Had to deliver to a first floor flat with steep steps and almost at the top a loose step ,almost fell.Reported it ,Dom and lino checked
it,they almost broke their neck .--Result deliveries suspended, within 10 days it was fixed, householder claimed they were going to fix it that weekend anyway!

Damn right they are!

I used to deliver in an area where everyone's steps were predominantly slate and they were bad in the wet too. And when we had all that snow, which then compacted into ice as I was walking up the steps to get to the letterboxes, it got really dangerous. But they didn't realise because they all used the backs of their houses as their front doors, but the letterboxes were at the front, with the steps still covered in snow and ice.

I have those quarry tiles at my front door but then my postbox is on the wall so my postie doesn't have to even step on them.

I never get the tiles on the doorstep thing, seriously dangerous when they are wet.
We have loads of flats with this outside and inside,a bit of rain and you're fecked.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
