Bradford City sign up for anti-prejudice fight

CWU members will be uniting with other equality campaigners at Bradford City Football Club tomorrow (Saturday) to celebrate the club's endorsement of the Sports Charter, which aims to "give homophobia the red card."

This also coincides with the CWU's own campaign focused on tackling homophobia in sport.

Long considered a bastion of anti-gay prejudice, football's record in tackling homophobic discrimination is lamentably poor and campaigners are determined to change this.

CWU national equality officer Linda Roy said: "Back in March, the Government launched a Sports Charter aimed at rooting out homophobia in sport, but, despite the Football Association being one of the Charter's founding signatories, so far, the number of professional clubs who have signed up remains in single figures - that's why its great that Bradford City are signing up on Saturday.

"Many CWU members are big football fans and, as an organisation committed to equality, we want homophobia to be shown the red card," she added.

Longstanding anti-homophobia activist Lindsey England, founder of the Just a ball game? Campaign, said: "Just a Ball Game? is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with trade union members on Saturday 10th December for the CWU 'Day of Action' as part of our ongoing campaigning and activist workload in challenging homophobia in football.

"We are also extremely pleased that Bradford City have agreed to host this historic day when football fans will unite to raise awareness through the literature handed out addressing anti-gay abuse and LGBT issues which are part of the sport.

"We hope this will be seen as a good practice model for other football clubs and indeed other sports to follow who wish to engage in taking a zero-tolerance approach towards both homophobia and transphobia."

To mark the occasion on Saturday, there will be a formal signing of the Charter by a senior Bradford City representative in the centre circle of the Valley Parade pitch.

Outside the ground, campaigners will be leafleting fans arriving for the match, in which 'The Bantams' entertain Plymouth Argyle, who activists hope will also soon add their name to the fight for equality.

Where: Outside the ground, Valley Parade, Bradford, BD8 7DZ
When: From 1.30pm on Saturday 10th December

The CWU has been heavily involved in campaigns for equality and against discrimination in sport. The Sports Charter came about as a result of long-running campaigns by activists from the union and other organisations.

I saw in the group on FB about "prepare to wrap up warm" etc... all I could think was "prepare to be amazed by how much of a dump Bradford is".

I think the M606 is the only dead end motorway in the UK not to have a seaside or funfair at the end of it... However, it's certainly the best thing to come out of Bradford!

It was one of the rudest, most unfriendly places I've ever had the misfortune of being to. And, I found there was a lot of attitude from young asian men who believed they could do what they wanted, and if they couldn't it was "some kind of racist sh*t" (that is an actual quote from a young guy I encountered in Carphone Warehouse who wasn't allowed to get a mobile phone contract because he had no ID on him).

And driving around there left me a nervous wreck! They thought nothing of just changing lanes without looking, indicating or even caring whether there was even a car occupying that space already. If you beeped, they gave you abuse like it was your fault for being there!

Ooooh, and I once drove home from work and could see a load of smoke coming from the direction of where I lived (the same building as the Crossbow Cannibal...) and I thought "Blimey, something's going up in smoke well!", only to find it was the building next door. The night I moved in, a car was set on fire outside my kitchen window. I found out not long after moving in that because they wanted to build a mosque on Lumb Lane, they'd moved all the prostitutes to where I now lived. A sofa was dumped outside my kitchen, I saw people p*ssing on it etc... then someone asleep on it! My car was broken into 3 times, once after I'd left it was literally 30 seconds to ask for directions to collect a parcel from one of the 2 RM buildings. And just after I left Bratfudd for good, someone was stabbed about 100m from where I'd lived. Then not long ago, there was the whole crossbow cannibal thing (he was weird).

All in all, steer clear of Bradford lol

Taken from the FB group "Avoid Bradford"

Why is Bradford so sh*t?

1. The M606 is the only dead-end motorway in Britain not to have a beach or a funfair at the end of it.

2. The Kirkgate Shopping Centre is there solely as a meeting place for crap parents to batter their crap kids without incurring the wrath of crap Social Services.

3. Heroin is not a drug in Bradford, its Breakfast, Dinner and Lunch.

4. Regeneration amounts to demolition and a giant crater that just keeps getting bigger. If this is the case, don’t stop at BD1, do every BD postcode (and HX3 just to be on the safe side).

5. Bradford police are just a call centre for providing crime reference numbers for insurance purposes. They are scared of the dark and have no legs or authority.

6. Only one person in your extended family needs a drivers licence, it just gets shared. Highway codes and traffic laws are optional.

7. You shouldn’t get a taxi in Bradford unless YOU know the way to where you’re going, Bradford cabbies couldn’t find a dog turd at Crufts.

8. Outside Bradford ‘Rita Sue and Bob Too’ is a film, inside Bradford it’s a fly-on-the-wall documentary.

9. G-G-Gareth Gates is from Bradford.

10. Peter Sutcliffe is the city’s most famous person and the reason No More Nails was invented.

11. If you sign on the dole in Bradford and DON’T own a Range Rover, you obviously haven’t filled the forms in properly.

12. The lingering impression Bradfordians have that the city is a rival to Leeds. Is it f*ck, its not even close.

13. Nobody under the age of 70 will remember when Bradford actually had ANYTHING going for it. And even then it’s only because there was a war on and they got evacuated from Bradford to the countryside.

14. There's a constant need to examine your shoes for dog muck until you realise its just generally how Bradford smells.

15. When people say “Can you smell take-away?”, its actually the offal plant and the wind is blowing south-westerly.

Like I said, I lived there and it's a horrible place. Don't get me wrong, I did meet some really lovely people and made some good friends. But I'm so glad to be away from the place!

Well to be fair I know Bradford fairly well, and where you lived makes Vice City in GTA look like Chelsea - its not exactly Queensbury was it.

Also Bradford City Centre really has a big hole in it
