Bulwell - Mail office closure would be 'unfair'

A PROPOSAL to close Royal Mail’s delivery office in Bulwell has been branded “unfair” by the town’s Labour MP.

Teice before, the postal service has denied having any plans to shut the base on Highbury Road.

But now it has launched a consultation about the closure which, if given the green light, would see the office merged with the one on Glaisdale Drive, Bilborough.

This would mean residents of Bulwell having to make a six-mile trip for some services, including collecting any mail and parcels that couldn’t be delivered to their homes.

Now Bulwell MP Graham Allen has spoken out and, in partnership with Bulwell members of Nottingham City Council, has written to the employment relations, consumer and postal affairs minister, Edward Davey.

Mr Allen said: “To be frank, Royal Mail has not been playing this one very fairly. Rumours have been circulating but neither staff nor customers knew anything.”

Mr Allen has launched a petition against the proposal.

He added: “The information I have received confirms the worst. We are not going to let this go without a fight.

“Many constituents do not have cars, so a trip on two buses to pick up a package is, to say the least, inconvenient.”

Royal Mail confirmed that it was consulting with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and information would go out to staff and customers in Bulwell this month.

A spokeswoman said the proposal was designed to improve working conditions and secure long-term unemployment, with no plans to cut jobs.

Royal Mail set to close delivery office

THE Royal Mail delivery office in Bulwell is to close.

It means people will have to use the Nottingham North delivery office in Sir John Robinson Way, Arnold – three-and-a-half miles away.

Royal Mail has blamed a fall in mail volumes for the closure. A date has not been announced.

The decision was taken after a meeting on Thursday evening in London involving Royal Mail, Nottingham North MP Graham Allen and Bulwell councillor Nick McDonald.

Mr Allen said: "This was a very disappointing result. I don't believe our views were listened to at all."

Royal Mail collection and delivery sector manager Wayne Jay said: "We are telling our people about the move now before the detailed planning starts. We want to be able to work with our people on the change and have the opportunity to discuss the implications with individuals."

Makes one question how his constituents manage to get to work, go shopping or keep doctors appointments.
