BR = Basic rate it's the correct code if you working more than about 22hours (less for night shifts due to higher pay rate) and you be paying 20% tax

Re: br tax code does it mean bloody rubbish?
Sorry must correct myself, been a while since i last looked at tax codes, BR is if its your second job (all money taxed)
20% tax is the standard tax rate and is what you'll pay if have to pay tax unless on the higher rate
If its your only job you should be on some like 747L, only the amount above the personal allowance is taxed

Re: br tax code does it mean bloody rubbish?
Last year I sent the Royal Mail a P45 and after a couple of weeks they suddenly changed my tax code to BR (which was completely wrong). So I had to mess about getting the Inland Revenue to change it.

Tax code stuff here...

If your tax is fecked for a while, you'll get a nice refund, slight silver lining.

BR Is used when all your income is taxed at the basic rate - currently 20 per cent (most commonly used for a second job or pension but may also be used if you’ve started a new job, don’t have a form P45 and haven’t completed a form P46 before your first pay day)

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Hi
BR Tax code as someone has already said means "Basic Rate" which today means "txed at 20%". It also means that you have zero Free Pay allowance on earnings on which the BR code is used, so you pay 20% on everything you earn.
BR should only be used by an employer in very limited circumstances:-
1. Advised to do so by HMRC.
2. Was the code on P45 provided by the employee.
3. Employee ticked Box C on P46 he/she submitted.
In simple terms if you have Tax Code BR applied to your earnings it means that it is believed that your Free Pay Allowance (£7,475 pa) is being applied to some other earnings - for example another job or pension.
If you do not have any other form of income, the use of BR is incorrect and you are being taxed too much.
Only way to correct it is to contact HMRC tel 0845 3000627, you will need your NI number and be prepared to answer some security questions, full name, address, dob etc.
If you can convince HMRC that the Angard job is your only source of income they will issue an amended code (Form P6) to Angard, probably 747L. If this is on a cumulative basis, you will get a refund of overpaid tax on the next pay day.
If HMRC still has some queries it could issue 747L week 1 basis, this is Emergency Tax Code, which means you will pay less tax per week but will not get a refund of previously overpaid tax.
Hope this helps
