CWU union and Angard

Post by POSTMAN »

Perhaps not much help to you guys now but the CWU are meeting with Royal Mail regarding Angard.
The CWU wrote:Angard – We have told the company that we are seeking an overall agreement on how Angard will be used within Royal Mail and that we will also be looking for a recognition agreement for agency workers. A further meeting has been diarised before Christmas and the Union is due to send Royal Mail a list of our specific concerns.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

finally, it may be too late for the christmas temps but us long suffering "temps" of five years have been waiting for them to actually do something!

We were hoping that as of 24th december we would finally get a decent wage when the AWR finally kicked in but it appears not.

the Union has been a disgrace in my opinion. Do they just take the view that because it's only the temps that are being screwed it has no ramifications for them?

That's extremely naive in my view. They should be considering industrial action

For a long time the TUC (including the CWU)have campaigned for agency workers rights, you have got new rights, but who's going to enforce it,keep an eye on it ect.

To be totally honest,RM casuals are nobody's,you won't get much help at all regardless of what 'recognition agreement' the CWU get,Royal Mail ignore OUR agreements, you have no chance.

This is not me being nasty, this is me being a realist.
As they say to us! 'If you don't like it,there's the door, plenty more where you came from'!

...... and if I may just back up what Postman says.

I think, as do some others that Royal Mail's use of Angard is the "there's the door" Policy brought to life. At some point they will start using Angard casuals against permanent employees and the "gradual" erosion of our T&Cs will accelerate and worsen.

Any of this sound familiar its what she tried at Canada Post according to this facebook page http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=7 ... topic=5770" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So what do Moya Greene’s fantasies about Canada Post look like, exactly?

Moya starts out saying she is not opposed to postal de-regulation, but Canada Post needs time to “shed legacy costs” and wants “flexibilities” and government support for the “culture change required to arrive at a more competitive cost structure.”

She spells out exactly what she wants in the next few sections of her brief:

• Moya wants the right to close more corporate post offices – and to replace them with drug store Retail Postal Outlets. Post Office Light anyone

• She wants an exemption from the Pension Benefits Standards Act regulations so that Canada Post does not have to fund pension solvency deficits. In other words, she wants the right to not fully fund our pension plan. Perhaps this is the “legacy cost” she wants to shed? sounds similar to our Pension - but to be fair that was all in the pipeline before she came

• And, after whining about the “numerous operating rigidities perpetuated through complex and stifling collective agreements” Moya says she wants major rollbacks in the CUPW collective agreement. Rollbacks that include:

o Part-time, casual and contract workers brought in to replace full-time employees Angard
o Workers no longer gaining assignments by seniority – management to decide.
o Individual work measurement expanded, to deal with “unproductive” workers. 100 BSI
o Canada Post no longer required to notify the Union of technological changes, (such as the Modern Post). WCM
o A much more limited grievance procedure.
o Wages linked to productivity targets

I was surprised that nobody from the union spoke to the casuals in the 3 weeks I worked. RM seem to have strangled the CWU, the permanent workforce seemed to me to be totally disheartened and uninterested in the "divide and conquer" tactics being used to erode their position. I thought it was particularly ironic that the walls were plastered with posters about stamping out bullying and supporting racial diversity when management was rubbing the workers noses in the s***t and employing non-British labour that was far less likely to complain about their conditions.
