Anyone else waiting for a start date from royal mail

Post by Melinafan »

Hi anyone else out there waiting for a start date from royal mail? My security checks were passed last week, but still no word? Is this usual practice?

This is exactly my position. I was interviewed for Christmas casual work at Truro Mail Centre on 5th October; my documentation was acceptable and the Royal Mail website confirmed several weeks ago that I had passed the security checks; but I have neither received a contract nor heard anything further either by telephone, e-mail or post. By sheer good luck I know where to go and (more or less) what to expect, since I have done a spell of this work before at the same venue; but is there any point in turning up without any confirmation?

My great concern is that, in view of the widely-reported excess of applications, Royal Mail may have decided to weed out the less valuable candidates by simply not executing their contracts, so that they never acquire any status as employees. (As a 60-year-old, I would certainly be among the discards.) Is this likely to be what is happening?

I finally received a e-mail last Monday (5th December) inviting me to attend at midday on the 7th. By this time I had long since given up hope and as meanwhile some work, requiring my full-time attention throughout this week, had come in for my (very) small printing business, I accepted it. I therefore e-mailed Reed Employment, who seem to be functioning as Angard's sole and intermittent point of contact with the human world, to say that I would not be available until next Monday, and explained why. I have heard, and expect to hear, nothing more.

Not, then, as grim a tale as some contributors have had to tell; but a sorry and shabby affair all the same. I am doubly saddened, since (besides the little matter of nearly a thousand pounds of income lost) I had genuinely been looking forward to working once more as one of the 'cohort of the damned'; I met some fine people three years ago, both temporary and permanent.

Was told I was on a reserve list at interviews. I got an email a while ago saying I'd been accepted and to wait for further correspondence with a start date. No emails or letters of an offer from them until a phone call (which I unfortunately missed) from an unknown no. on 1st of Dec which I presumed was Angard. I was sure they'd ring back the next day but after they didn't I sent an email asking for info and to try calling again. After a week, I thought they'd just forgotten about it so I presumed they didn't want/need me. In a way, it was good as I had a huge amount of Uni work to do. Now I get a call saying I could have started on the 28th Nov! but they hadn't contacted me until the 1st :hmmmm

Anyway, now it's two weeks into December and I can apparently start on Monday, but after spending a while on this forum I can envisage what will happen when I get there; they won't know who I am, I won't be on any of their paper work and I may get turned away (I hope not). Also I haven't been for a proper induction thingy so they're going to be pleased at me turning up on one of their busiest days with no clue to what I'm supposed to be doing.
