Rights as a christmas casual?

Post by mahrm1 »

What rights as a christmas casual got?

Reason I ask is because Friday all us casuals got taken in a room for like a meeting and the manager said if we are off for say one day and then dont turn in the next day that is it we are no longer in a job, now I know we dont get a union like the permi workers do but we must have some rights I mean surely you cant just loose your job for being of ill can you?

Pasted from the Angard Induction Booklet;

4.1.1.1 Lateness
Lateness is classed as an individual arriving more than 5 minutes after the start of shift.
When this occurs, Angard will be informed and it will remind you that lateness is not acceptable.
4.1.1.2 Planned Absence
Where you know in advance (24 hours or more) that you have a prior commitment that would prevent you from attending for a particular shift, you must inform Angard. A single planned absence within the agreed secondment is acceptable.
4.1.1.3 Failure to Attend
If you fail to attend for a shift, Angard will be informed and they will inform you that your secondment has been terminated unless a valid reason is provided in writing

It doesn't say you will be dismissed for being sick. It says you must provide a valid reason for your absence in writing.

Despite what the Angard Induction Booklet might say, RM managers will treat Xmas temps as they want to.
They seem to believe that sacking some will encourage the rest to work harder. Last year (pre-Angard) they were telling Xmas temps who turned up late that they were no longer required.

Sadly, the only rights you have, are to be paid for the work you do, and have a safe working environment. Apart from that, they can do whatever they like. Including dismissing you for becoming ill. :evil/mad :Sick They don't even need to give a reason for your dismissal.

Hubbahubba, don't you think that's too harsh?
No-one CHOOSES to become genuinely ill. It does happen, even when you're a temporary worker. :hmmmm

Is it true that managers get like a bonus if they hit all the targets is this why they use threat tactics towards christmas casuals?

It may come across as harsh, but thats because RM are harsh. The fact of the matter is casuals are two a penny in the current economic climate, and although it would be unlucky to get sick at this time,RM are in the postion to pick and choose.....

Unfortunately we all get pooped on in the RM. But it is far worse for casuals as they are considered more 'expendable' than anybody else.

For what it's worth casuals in any industry not just RM, have my sympathy. Was a casual myself many many years ago and think I'd rather go on the dole than go back to being treated that badly!

Inflexible, draconian stupidity! Where is the phone number to ring? I was told to ring the local depot and not Angard which makes sense.

I couldn't agree more! It's dispicable the way they treat Casuals! :Sick They've always been treated badly by RM, but now they've sunk to new depths with Angard. The worst thing is, that with the exception of being paid properly (which you can challenge through ET), and having a safe working environment, you have NO legal protection from this treatment. They don't even have to provide a REASON to dismiss you! :evil/mad :Sick

If you ever come across dangerous practices or equipment (they probably don't tell you about this!), you can have a word with the CWU H&S Rep, even though you're not IN the CWU. Most of them are in that position because they care about H&S, so will help you anyway. If that fails, just contact HSE, and they'll look into it for you. You can do it annonymously, so the Managers will never know who "blew the whistle" on them. And don't worry, the H&S Rep won't tell them it was you, even if they can't help, or choose not to.

LOL where you been, see the stickies in the Angard forum, especially the LTB and the 'Any Journalists Trawling this site?/Angard Staffing?' thread. :Very Happy

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

the way RM treats the casuals and how casuals are treated in other industries is just what this Tory led government wants for the rest of us with the repatriation of powers back from Europe! Remember the way the casuals are treated when you are asked to vote in any referendum!
