Among the many things that grind my gears: floating cover on whatever walk i am covering that week doesnt do the d2d expected as he has an 'arrangement' with the duty holder to do the easiest bit instead. Obviously i only get to know this after i've prepped that day's d2d and it overlaps with the area he's already done or he's done a bit i already did earlier. Have to rearrange it all.

interesting reading with many choice thoughts . ive only been doin the job about 4 to 5 years and try to keep out of the politics of it , but on this my observation is that most full timers live to much in the past and are the worst for moaning when for me its clear full timers are overpaid and underworked where part timers are overworked, there will be exceptions to this but not many ,until the divide between f/t and p/ters is addressed let alone the out dated management structure royal mails future doesnt look good

You're right mate. Royal Mail's future doesn't look good. The rest of your post is the biggest pile of shite I've read in a long time.

This time last year i would probably agree with you but my office has since had a full revision now everyone is overworked all the old timers have went onto rural duties to get away from the P&L chaos and they are not exactly easy. The only people who have it easy now wear cheap primarni suits and shiney shoes.

I did a shift today which that was basically full time hours (7am - 3pm). Usually Im on a 9 till 2 part time shift and I cant believe how much more relaxed it is when you start at 7am.

On my normal hours I always feel rushed and under pressure to get everything done in time just so I dont end up going out at 11am or later, I dont even have time to go for a whizz lol.

Coming in at 7am was a different experience completely, had plenty of time to spare, could take my time prepping my walk, actually had time to do D2D's and since my finishing time was an hour later, plus getting out earlier meant I didnt go over my time. On a normal day I go over at by at least 45 minutes, and Ive sort of realised that going over on a 9 till 2 contract is pretty much unavoidable since most days my walk is only half thrown in. Theres no way I can sort my own mail, packets, redirections, kill offs, D2D's and not go into overtime when I come in at 9am. The only other option is to come in early unpaid but Im not going to start doing that.

It's unbelievable how part-timers get thrashed around in almost every office.

I can relate to everything that was said above. The reality is that most of us go through exactly the same process:

1. First we are trying to be nice with managers and work hard to impress, because we want our stupid-ass 3 month fixed term contracts to be extended

2. Then the managers start taking the piss and use you like a dog to do whatever they ask to do - prepping a walk from scratch at 9am, sending you to random offices all the time, bullying you into working overtime, threatening job security and much more s**t.

3. And then comes the final part, when we have enough and want to quit...

Seriously after only the first 3 months of my part-time employment with RoyalMail, I wanted to quit. That's how BAD it was.

I decided to stay, BUT play "my game" a bit differently.

The best advice that I can give to part-timers is to READ THE CONTRACT and FOLLOW THE RULES.

What I realized is that managers take advantage of us, because we don't know "the rules". I'm talking about the stuff like that you don't have to do overtime, if it's heavy, then you can ask for help or cut off and other little things...

When you start "playing by the book", the managers will have 2 choices: either leave you alone and start treating you with respect or sack you and find another idiot, who will be willing to take s**t from them.

That's the sad truth for part-timers who work with Royal Mail.

I wish the mods could make a special sticky for part-time stuff of Royal Mail, because it's such a pain to see people get treated like this.

The only thing I hate about being part time (my part time being 32.5 hours) now is the fact that when I start, everyone else (full time and part timers who've come in early) are pretty much done boxing in and sorting packets at half 7 and spend the rest of the time lounging around till 8:45, pick up missorts and bog off at 9 sharp.

No chance of catching the driver to get out to the start of delivery. It's cool though because I have a nice 30 minute break, saunter back down to the office and ask the manager who's giving me a lift out to my duty. Usual responce is "why the f**k haven't you caught your driver!?!" to which I respond "Why didn't you stop them from leaving without me?" repeat this daily for the last 6 or 7 years.

The funny thing is I still finish for my time most days despite doing a different walk every single day. The hours RM lose through early finishing must be bloody phenomenal.

mclovin wrote:yes i would, pters in my office are all on 5 hours a day or more.

Now if they cant find enough time within that to do a 3.30 hour walk, 20 minute break and throw in a few letters/do redirections and packets, then they aint worth s**t.
most partimers should have to just throw a few letters out & do their walks&that would be great but the problem is you fulltimer's dont throw them off & leave us in the s**t cz your all selfish.! how can a fulltimer be bundling up when i get in & i still have to throw mine out & he is paid an hour later than me! :arrrghhh . aint worth s**t?? thats fellow workers you slating there! :cuppa
