So do you check that every door you put the mail through is actually locked? If it's not then the mail isn't secure.

How secure are those outside box things?
Most of the time the mail is still accessible.

We know how RM operate especially these days,if you open a porch door, throw the stuff in and walkaway and it goes missing you're asking for trouble, peeps have been sacked for less.
If you have a dodgy porch situation flag it to your manager, see the customer if you can, cover your arse ffs.

With regards to throwing a packet in even though the letters go through the porch letter box,in your defense you can argue that it's not your job to check if doors are locked or not when you post the letters, what is your defense if you throw a packet in?
Cover your arse.

Wouldn't that would come under "reasonable expectation" - If the door is shut its reasonable to surmise that the house is secure - if anything was knicked it would be a great injustice if you were sacked for insecure mail delivery.

It has never occurred to me to enter someone's house (on a 'normal' walk, some rurals are unique, they have their own rules). I consider a porch (with a door) someones house. I always use first letterbox I see, if no letterbox, I would try door and if it opens, I'd chuck mail in and shut the door behind me. I would never enter a porch and use an 'inner' letterbox.

Surely its up to the customer to provide a means of delivering on the outermost part of their house?

Is it not the case that our only liability to the home owner is to ensure that the mail is delivered to the inside of the house. I would say that inside a porch is regarded as part of the house and therefore is inside the house, just as leaving a packet inside the garage.

IN addition to this, when I was walk tested the guy said you can leave a package in a porch so long as it is out of sight so it is clearly incorrect to think that mail MUST be put through the inner box. This is all a bit of a grey area. For example if you trip over the door frame while using the inner box could you be sacked for unneccessarily endangering yourself? Personally It depends on the customer and the door for me. If it's a real pain - outside box, if it's quick and they are friendly - inside box. If they complain tell them to contact your office for clairification and just follow your manager and union advice. You could insist on a H&S check of the porch if it's dodgy. Sliding porch doors are the most annoying, but great for packets!

Well he said that was the official line. In porch out of sight is ok he said and he was 100% certain of it.

Then there's BT Vision Tracked....

Additional parcel delivery information for BT Vision
What happens if I'm not available to take delivery?
Wherever possible, the Royal Mail will leave your parcel in a dry, secure location. If you don't specify a location when your place your order, then typically this will be:
With a neighbour.
Your front or back porch. :left:
In your garage.
In a shed or outbuilding.

Then there's the new doorstepping charter...the leave with anybody trial... :whistle
Jobs a mess. :cuppa

No he was a postie and he'd been walk testing for years. I know you're saying it has to be secure but define 'secure'. It is a loose term and perhaps the company believes out of sight and inside private property is secure. Some unlocked porches contain private possesions like shoes, coats, bikes and tables with plants on them and are therefore clearly regarded as 'secure' by the householder - therefore we are taking their lead by using a porch as a 'secure' place?
