A CITY MP (Nottingham) has accused the Royal Mail of acting unfairly after learning it wants to a close a delivery office.

The Post first reported concerns over the future of Bulwell delivery office in Highbury Vale in September and further worries were highlighted last week.

On both occasions Royal Mail denied having any firm plans to close the office and merge it with Bilborough delivery office in Glaisdale Drive.

But Nottingham North MP Graham Allen says he has now had it confirmed a consultation on the proposal is taking place – which may leave Bulwell customers facing a six-mile trip for some postal services.

He has teamed up with councillors to try to save the office and has written to employment relations, consumer and postal affairs minister Edward Davey.

"To be frank, Royal Mail has not been playing this one very fairly. Rumours have been circulating but neither staff nor customers knew anything," said Mr Allen.

"The email I have received confirms the worst. We are not going to let this go without a fight. Many constituents do not have cars and a trip on two buses to pick up a package is to say the least inconvenient."

Mr Allen has started a petition, which will be available for people to sign at a stall in Bulwell Market Place on Saturday from 10.30am.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I am horrified at this terrible news.

"I am disabled, deaf and in constant pain. There is no way that I can get two buses to Glaisdale Parkway, walk a long way to the sorting office and then face a long walk back to a bus stop."

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden confirmed Royal Mail was consulting with the Communication Workers Union and that no decision would be made before December, when information will go out to staff and customers.

It is possible a local collection facility for undelivered mail would be retained and customers could request a redelivery.

Ms Bodden added: "If the move goes ahead it would improve working conditions, build on the excellent customer service levels that we achieve and provide long-term employment and job security. It does not involve reducing the number of employees."

I kind of like the fact that this seems to surprise the MP. As if it were something out of the ordinary.

Where have you been of late? :Very Happy Welcome to our world Mr.Allen.
