Following months of campaigning by News Shopper, a Bill to extend legislation to cover dog attacks on private land has passed through the House of Lords. Reporter KELLY SMALE finds out more.
UNDER current law owners of dogs which are out of control can only be prosecuted if the incident occurs on public land - leaving people like postmen and social workers dangerously exposed.
But a new Dog Control Bill put forward by Lord Redesdale would extend this to cover private land such as people's homes.
The bill will now be considered by the House of Commons and, if passed, would replace all current dangerous dog law meaning the abolishment of breed specific legislation and the introduction of dog control notices.
Lord Redesdale said: “I am delighted to have been part of this movement to push for the revision of existing dangerous dogs legislation.
"By introducing preventative measures, such as dog control orders, problem behaviour can be addressed before more serious incidents take place."
