A colleague had an accident last week whilst working. Donig the job he was supposed to be doing he suffered an arm injury. He asked to put it in the accident book, before going to the Hospital, but was told there is no accident book, it has to be entered online ! Then the DSM told our lino it wasnt an accident at work anyway !!!! wtf !!!
I thought it was a legal requirement to have an accident book on the premises ?????

the accident is recorded online on the erica system and then printed out and placed in the erica folder in your do, this is the accident book, so yes there is a legal requirement to have an accident book but royal mail are not doing anything wrong by recording it online and printing it out

I would recommend that the injured party get to the DWP and register it as an Industrial Accident.

Also , i dont wanna appear a bit thick here, but just so as i can tell him firmly, whats the benefit of logging it in the Accident Book, or classing it as an Industrial injury ?????

It helps if later on as a result of the injury you need to be registered as disabled, or if it is found that the injury exacerbated a known or unknown condition. But the biggest one is if DWP accept it as an Industrial Injury they inform Royal Mail - ergo RM have no hiding place and cannot deny it ever being reported.

Same for the Accident Book it records that you have reported an accident, especialy important if RM fail to report it when they are legally bound to in some circumstances (RIDDOR)

And make sure he does record it. If he doesn't do it, keep notes of when you reported it to him etc, even though it might be just a bit sore now, the full effects might not be known until later. My manager didn't report my accident, even though I reported it to him and was off sick with the injury that ensued. He should have then informed me to report it to DWP (according to HR).


Now 4 years down the line I'm in pain every day with ensuing arthritis in said knee and had a battle to prove it was an industrial injury. Luckily, when I explained to DWP about no accident book being available to staff and that it had to be done on the intranet with a manager and that my sick record showed that I had 3 days off with an injured knee, they could see that I wasn't faking.

AS STATED

there is no accident book now, it is all being done by electronic reporting (ERICA)

THIS IS NOW A LEGAL REQUIREMENT

the accident must be recorded on the erica system within 24 hours of the accident, and within 48 hours if over the weekend

if the condition lasts more than three days of sickness then it gets upgraded and reported to the H.S.E. as a RIDDOR

also, this is not an INCIDENT but an ACCIDENT

any problems please update your thread, royal mail has not a very good accident record and have to reduce the reporting by 10 % a year

I havent seen him for 2 weeks cos of annual leave, but i did take him to hospital when it happened, on my last day. What happens if it or he, wasnt able to report it within that timeframe. Bear in mind the last i heard, the DSM was trying to say it wasnt an accident at work !!!!!

AS SOON AS THE ACCIDENT IS REPORTED TO THE LINE MANAGER DOM

IF THE POSTY IS IN HOSPITAL, THE MANAGER WILL DO A PRILIM REPORT ON THE erica system which is date recorded

well Keith, it was because my manager was either too lazy or too busy But these are the excuses that they come out with. It's just through my own experience that I encourage people not to be fobbed off now. That's why I really think there should be something that the postie on the street can log rather than rely on management.

ALL ERICA REPORTS GET SENT TO THE A.S.R THROUGH THE ERICA ANYWAY

DONT TAKE CRAP FROM A MANAGER

REMIND THEM OF THERE LEGAL RESPONSABILITY

Yes but that's what I'm getting at, I had only been in the job a month when I had my AOD, many new posties think that telling a manager will be enough, I even asked about an accident book. "Oh don't worry, we'll sort it tomorrow, really busy today!", of course, knee was swollen for next 3 days and I had them off sick...Asked about it on return to work, and it was oh it's too late now.... I just wish I had found these forums back then. Hence why I would urge everyone to report report report! And keep reporting until they are blue in the face!

Now I'm not naive, but I have never known any company to employ managers like they do in Royal Mail, everything is, we'll do it tomorrow, unfortunately, I didn't know they were like that one month into the job, or I would have demanded it was done there and then.
