Royal Mail team come up trumps for charities

THE Royal Mail's hearts of gold Community Action team celebrated their silver anniversary with yet another bumper fund-raising collection for local charities.

Over the past 25 years, the Mail's 300 club of volunteers has raised in excess of £300,000 for deserving causes.

And despite the tough economic times the mail workers came up trumps, managing to raise four-figure sums for their designated charities.

The Community Team's major benefactor is St Luke's Hospice, but there were also good-sized cheques for other local charities – the Chestnut Appeal, Jeremiah's Journey, the Shekinah Mission and Woodside Animal Trust.

Spokesman for the Community Team Brendan Moloney said the 300 volunteers were an eclectic mix of cleaners and managers, united in a common cause, to help those less well off than themselves.

He said: "This is our 25th year of fundraising and we will be celebrating with St Luke's Hospice, our main benefactor, by holding a large fun day that will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of St Luke's (at Turnchapel).

"We raise funds annually through events like boat parties, sponsored walks, themed nights and fun days.

"But the bulk comes from the staff at Royal Mail in the Plymouth area who make donations directly from wages and in return get entered into a weekly prize draw.

"Our aim is to make 2012 a record-breaking year for fund raising."
