Where Royal Mail fails to deliver

Heulyn Gwyn Davies, senior external relations manager of the Royal Mail Group, gave some advice regarding resolving issues "to the satisfaction of our customers" – by contacting Royal Mail customer services (Mailbox, September 9).

A number of years ago I had a written agreement with Royal Mail regarding leaving items with designated neighbours, if they were unable to deliver at my home address.

Over the years this arrangement proved very successful.

There was a couple of slight problems due to lost instructions at the sorting office, and this was soon resolved via the local sorting office.

Since the beginning of this year, I have had to make four very inconvenient visits to collect undelivered items from Campbell Street.

Questioning why this was happening with Royal Mail customer services, I was firmly informed that Royal Mail do not deliver to designated neighbours.

Being rather confused about this information and previous arrangement, I asked who I could take up this problem with. I was told to contact the Plymouth customer services and was given that address.

My letter to Plymouth was redirected to Glasgow for a response.

I was again informed that Royal Mail do not deliver to designated neighbours, and if I wished I could escalate the complaint by contacting Plymouth.

I once again contacted Royal Mail customer services at Plymouth, only to be informed again that my request regarding deliveries to designated neighbours had been rejected, because Royal Mail did not provide this service.

Should I not agree with Royal Mail's decision, then I could contact the Postal Review Panel, which I duly did.

The response from that review panel, was partially in agreement with Royal Mail's decision. I eventually contacted the area delivery manager, expressing my concerns.

I have still yet to find out if the information being given by Royal Mail customer services is actually correct, because some of their public information literature – in the form of a card – states that if they cannot deliver an item then "as requested, your item has been left with your designated neighbour."

Being a senior citizen, I have taken extra steps to make life easier for both myself and people delivering items.

I have installed a sound-light door bell system, enlarged the letter box opening and placed a very prominent instruction notice on the door – perhaps all to no avail?

If Mr Davies or a senior representative of Royal Mail wants to contact me about my recent experiences, then please feel free to do so, because the way I still understand it, is that Royal Mail do not deliver to designated neighbours, and my present arrangement could end without due notice – with the then possible option of trying to deal with Royal Mail's customer services once again, for a service that they advertise, but do not do!

That's a little harsh.
We do advertise the service on the 739 card.
We apparently are trialling leaving packets with any bod in the street.
Yet he who wants it, can't get it. Shambles.

Royal mail isn't failing to deliver anything.
We have a contract with point A to send it to point B...not point C.
If point B wants it sent to point C instead he should instruct point A to address it to point C.
That's kind of how a delivery business works...it isn't difficult to understand.

Or he could either be in when we attempt to deliver or we can re deliver to an alternate address (Specials and Tracked excluded), it's so much not a story that I'm even surprised the local paper had it :chuckle

His postman has probably been dropping off his packets next door as a favour.Suddenly he decides it agreed with the DO.

Then why do we carry P739 cards with 'Left with designated neighbour'. Whats the point if we dont

As far as i'm aware both the "Safe Place" and "Designated Neighbour" instructions relate specifically to RM Tracked items.
This is an instruction from point A...the sender...not point C...the recipient.

If that is the case FT then it is confusing as it doesnt say tracked only. I realise that the 'Left in safe place' is meant for tracked
and that it is next to the neighbour option but I just assumed that if there is a note on the door saying 'please leave with Mrs Craddock across road'
that I just put a note through her letter box and take it to the fanny across the road :chuckle

are folks not getting WTL on this?
the line is the recipient doesn't get to decide this
official line is the sender is the customer
also bear in mind anyone can leave a note on the door
scams relating to misrouting posts are common and risking your job to save someone a trip/call to the DO is a fools choice

Update on RM courier today.
In the letter section and in reply to the Wake-up call letter in particular, the lead collection & delivery sector manager at Peterborough stated the following;
"Our customers have a variety of options available. In most cases, customers can nominate a safe place to leave the item if we cant deliver it."

This was pointed out by a postie at work, honest
