A GP might not be aware that there are other duties that can be done that don't involve being out on the streets, carrying mail etc etc etc. If you said to the GP that there was work available that involved sitting down scribbling out addresses with a blue crayon, I'm sure even they'd agree you could manage that with a full hand in a cast, never mind a finger in a splint

Don't get me wrong, I'm not generally one for siding with RM, but as long as light duties are discussed and the OP sticks to their guns as to what they can/can't do then I don't see a problem with going back to work with the injury described... providing the GP gives consent once they are fully aware of all the facts of what the light duties entail of course... otherwise that old "if I ignore GP advice and anything else happens RM won't cover me" chestnut comes into play... etc etc etc.

The same as I've just said?! lol The GP still has to say what you're fit/not fit for. If your GP says you're only fit for light duties, and your DOM says there aren't any and isn't willin to find you any, then you can't do any can ya?! My DOM loaned me out to other offices doing staff training/A Plus etc because I had a skill set <smug> :chuckle :whistle

Ive been off for a week with sciatica, on going since August but the pain became unbearable.

Seen the doc a week ago and he put me on naproxen and painkillers.

Due a call from EHS tomorrow and going to see my doc for a sick note tomorrow too.

Waiting to see a physio which Ive been told should be either a week or 2 weeks tomorrow.

Now, can they send me back to work even on light duties?

I cant bend, carry anything remotely heavy, walk or stand for long periods without pain in my left leg.

Fair enough then! If there's no work available then the GP can't sign you back for light duties.

It's up to your GP at the end of the day. The OP has a broken finger, something that doesn't stop them walking/talking/scribbling/sitting etc and therefore there are indoor duties that could be done. However, sciatica can be a very painful nerve condition, and if you are unable to do walking etc then that further limits your indoor capability. However, there may still be other things that can be done, as there always are. It just depends whether there's anything that matches what you would be able to do, and whether (as the OP also inferred to) your DOM will stick by those guidelines or start asking you to do more than you're able before you're ready, such as they did to me... which only prolonged my recovery ironically.

It's your GP's decision at the end of the day. If your GP says no, then it's a no. Unless RM are willing to accept responsibility for anything that happens as a result of your illness while you're at work (HIGHLY unlikely!) then they'll just continue to harass you at home. Did I says harass? I meant continue to keep updated with your progress... :chuckle
