AN Abergavenny man has become the third generation of his family to run a village post office.
Keith Caine, 45, is the new sub post master at Mardy Post Office, Hereford Road, following the retirement of his mother Rosemary Caine, 71 last week.
Mrs Caine, of Gwent Road, known affectionately as Rose to customers, was sub post mistress at the Post Office from 1969, when she took over from her father-in-law Alfred Caine. Alfred started the business in 1955 in what is now the nearby Londis store, before moving to its current premises in 1964.
The grandmother-of-three took the difficult decision to retire as sub post mistress after 42 years for health reasons but is thrilled that the business is staying in the family. "I have many happy memories of my time at the Post Office and have made many friends over the years, serving four generations of some families and many people I grew up with," said Mrs Caine.
"I want to thank our customers who have supported us over the years but the time has come to hand over to Keith and his wife Zoie, who I know will do their best to carry on the Post Office and the shop."
Mr Caine, who has worked as a manager at the Post Office for 24 years, said: "Zoie and I are thrilled to become the third generation of Caine's to run Post Office and shop."
