ihr or redundancy

I'm confused - Can you not take the IHR and then get another job?, surely it means you can't do postie work anymore, but sitting in an office wouldn't be a problem..................how does it all work?

they wont give me another job in royal mail if they retire me on ill health grounds. so i,ll only get 17grand then im on the dole. and at my age(52) and being finished on ill health with osteoarthritis and a knee replacement i dont have a cat in hells chance of getting another job ANYWHERE.

Firstly as mentioned before. You should have listened to the surgeon/specialist. Unless I'm mistaken - and your manager knows more...That extra 6+ weeks off will have given you time to recuperate.

You need OHS on board. For a proper rehab program. OA will not get better in the long run - it will only get worse. I don't know the possibilities of you getting a position in your nearest MC. You mentioned that you are in receipt of your RM pension? Most MC's I'm sure are not taking on at the moment?

I suppose I'm a realist - and you might not want to hear this. But, if you carry on, who knows how your condition will worsen? 5-10 years from now. You could be in a wheelchair? Are they redundancies in your area? IHR one-off payment might not seem much. Do you have much service in to calculate a possible redundancy instead? If IHR payoff is only alternative. Life is cruel. You could possibly pay off chunk of mortgage. To relieve the stress a little - and possibly take driving lessons to re-train?

In my experience VR's are offered only when there is a head count reduction. That is to say there is some sort of revision activity going on, and the end result would be fewer jobs. In this situation and when the total amount of VR packages is known these are then offered to the most senior person(s) who has applied for it.
I don't know where you are seniority wise but you would not get spring-boarded to the front of the queue, because of you unfortunate situation. Once upon a time VR's were offered to the holder who was loosing their job, not any more, now as I've said its to the most senior person who has applied.

Plenty of agencies out there looking for staff, I know it's menial and not as good money as RM but they can lead to permanent jobs with increased salaries, managerial positions sometimes, you're hardly finished at 52 are you!

I know it sucks but I'm trying to help, there is life after Royal Mail, no matter what age you are, one of our linos has just left and he's now working for APCOA, as a parking attendant for Trainline, similar pay to what OPG's get.

If they could not identify appropriate alternative duties you would be put forward for Ill Health Retirement.
You could then appeal this decision and the business would have to show that every reasonable avenue had been explored.
You cannot bump the redundancy ladder due to ill health.

Also I would get my covered under the Equality Act, which gives yourself extra protection .....
