Royal Mail has betrayed its glorious legacy

Like so much else in modern Britain, the post isn’t what it used to be.

Thousands of post offices have closed, the second delivery has been axed and the ‘morning post’ now drops through the letterbox at all times of the day, inconveniencing householders and causing immense problems for businesses.

Yet, even in the context of this diminished service, the most recent manoeuvre by the Royal Mail takes one’s breath away.

Since July, millions of Royal Mail customers have, to put it bluntly, been deceived. They have bought first-class stamps without being told that all correspondence sent on a Saturday will arrive at the same time as that sent second class. Both categories are now sorted and despatched as one.

With volumes of post declining, the need to make the service as efficient as possible is entirely understandable but there can be no excuse for failing to inform customers of this change.

The Royal Mail, a state-owned company, will not say how much money has been needlessly spent since the covert introduction of their new policy. For many small firms, the costs could run into thousands of pounds. For others it may be a matter of a few pence.

The principle, however, remains the same. It is a betrayal, not only of its customers but also of an institution that was once the envy of the world. In its Edwardian heyday the Royal Mail was a byword for British energy and efficiency. It was trusted and could always be relied upon.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of the Royal Mail today.

"The Royal Mail, a state-owned company, will not say how much money has been needlessly spent since the covert introduction of their new policy. RM hasn't "stopped giving priority to first-class letters and packages posted on Saturdays" but with "Second-class traffic posted Friday and Saturday will be processed along with first-class posted Saturday, using Saturday first-class labels" you're getting a first class serive for a second class stamp, a SAVING of 10p, at the end of the week.
