Cheers for the help.
I know for a fact that there are a few duties that could absorb some of my duty. DOM even has it all figured out, he wants to even out the runs, has a plan of which streets should be going onto which duty, but a lot of the `old timers` have different opinions. When SDD came in, there was a certain 2 who carved up the duties between them. Guess who has the 2.5 hour duties...
Anyway, we all know there are ways to make a 2 hour duty look like a 3 hour one when it`s tested. As the PHG I see the same 3 or 4 people finishing at 1030 or 1100, when I`m always out until after midday.
What`s being said is that the gaffer can`t sort the duties without agreement from the office, and a re-sign. Not going to happen, I think.
Anyway, my plan is to just time myself every day next week. I`ll tell the gaffer exactly what I`m doing, show him the breakdown of my times for each day, to cover my back. After that I`ll know exactly when I`m gonna be over 3.5 hours.
I`m not gonna be very popular if I have to force a resign, but tbh, no-one else is gonna do it, so it looks like it`s going to be me...
I`m just sick of all these tossers that believe they can get away with working a 6 hour day, while the rest of us get shafted.

Brave decision M.M but a right one.
There is the odd walk at my place,i think 2 out of 16 that are easy, one i do,but it takes just as long to throw in than the others i do.
But by an all we're much the same.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

major I am going through the same thing my duty is 4 hours long and when I complained the screw said he wants to dump some of the work onto the walk next door implying that he is lazy and finishes at 11.00.major.mawanga wrote:Cheers for the help.

We have to be careful not to fall into the trap of feeling envious ie I'm out there till after 12 so he bloody well should be as well, that's how the screws play us off against one another.
The guys on the walks have probably suffered the crap and now have enough seniority to get a decent walk and if they are not senior guys then that's who should be on the easier walks.
If you make all the walks harder then you will have nothing to sign for in a few years time when you want to take it a bit easier so I know it's hard as I am suffering it at the moment as well but do try and think long term.
The thing the screws should be doing is putting more duties in or at least paying overtime where the walk exceeds 3.5 hours as there are guys who will sign for that knowing they are guaranteed a bit of o/t.
Stand together and don't let :lfo :cfo make Royal mail go like British Rail

I agree in principle Wildcat, but the thing that gets me here is the fact I work a 40 hour week, other guys work 35, but get paid for the full 40.
There`s no way I`m gonna let the gaffer play us off against each other, but fair is fair.
I`ll be honest, I`m not planning on working for RM in a few years time, but if I am, I don`t wanna be the prat taking the other guys for a ride.
I don`t see this re-sign happening any time soon, in the meantime it will be going out as OT as far as I can tell, and I know a few boys who`ll take the hour for it.

I see a Manager in the making here! There are NO PHGs anymore we are all OPGs or AGs and with the length of service cometh the perks - if the shoe was on the other foot I get the feeling you'd be arguing the opposite. A resign has very defined criteria and can only be triggered by them not by someone who feels they have been ousted from a cushy indoor job.major.mawanga wrote:Cheers for the help.

Now this wont make you feel any better but....
If you do start leaving some of your duty so you can finish on time and not go over. Well, I hope you're aware that more than likely the people taking the bit you leave out and getting overtime for it will be those on the cushy easier walks, and they'll still be finishing before you, even doing your cut off, and getting paid overtime to do so.
Seniority's a good thing, but when it's manipulated and used by one person for their advantage at the detriment of almost everyone else then it's a bad thing.

Yeah, well, whatever dvbuk55. You got your opinion, but you don`t know how our office works. I don`t see how I deserve to be insulted. Ever done a PHGs job? Maybe I`ve been indoors for a few months, doesnt mean I don`t know how to do my job.
I was looking for advice, I end up with tossers giving me aggro. Whatever.
EDIT: Thank to the guys who offered advice, but I don`t want a flame war to start on this thread, so, I`m done.

I have done several PHG jobs as was but are no longer - it is now a defunct title.major.mawanga wrote:Yeah, well, whatever dvbuk55. You got your opinion, but you don`t know how our office works. I do know your office doesn't work to your advantage obviously - who knows on a resign you may end up with a better job or not depending on your seniority - why not apply to be an acting manager.

major.mawanga i think the message is simple. you just constantly work to your contractual hours, speak to your unit rep explaining you dont wish to be walking over 3.5hrs, he/she can then inform the manager there is a problem with the duty and it needs to be tested .bottom line you cant be forced to work over your contracted hours. on another note you mentioned that your manager stated he cant sort duties without an agreement from the office or re-sign. in regards to a re-sign you would need 33% change in duty content within your office for the re-sign but you dont need the whole office to agree to a change in your duty. the manager and unit rep along with your input can easily come to an agreement of how much would need to be removed from your duty content at present to make the duty achieavable under the existing ntional agreement of 3.5hrs.
