Saying that CWU grades are responsible for the selfish culture in RMG is a bit like saying that lab rats are responsible for their cocaine addiction.

If managers can go to the trouble of putting people on stage 1 warnings for absence due to accidents on duty, they could make the effort to ensure that everyone does their fair share of work. They could also ensure that RMG policies are being followed but they choose not to because it cuts costs and they get rewarded for cost cutting.

Getting work done on overtime cuts costs. You can employ less people and don't have to pay holiday, sick pay etc. A lot of CWU grade workers are addicted to overtime because it keeps getting put in their cage. RMG benefit because workers are more likely to accept a low basic wage if they can make up their money on overtime. RMG management are responsible for the conditions that have created this dog eat dog culture.

And what is the result?

Are the public getting a better service?

This recession is feeding itself. All employers are cutting staff and making the survivors absorb the work. Unemployed people can't go shopping so there is less demand for goods and services which leads to more people being laid off. People in work aren't spending money because the prices are shooting up and they don't know if they'll have a job next year.

The Government should not allow RMG to pay bonuses to Unit managers who keep their units under resourced and rely on the work getting done on overtime or use overtime addicts to bully others to cover the work that has deadlines. RMG is still owned by all of the UK taxpayers and each of us own the same share as any manager.
