I know about returning within duty time ,and am quite happy to work until 2pm although we are currently on longs and shorts so its 2:20pm.

One of the questions asked during accident investigation is "was a a break taken?" That's so they can use skipping your break as an excuse to apportion blame due to tiredness or fatigue, you cant pick and choose what parts of health and safety you want to follow. You were wrong to skip your break and try and knock off early and your DUM was wrong to send you out on your own push bike.

we don't have a DUM/DOM either he is based in the nearby sorting/delivery office as he covers 2 offices

To the OP-
Take your break BEFORE you go out, you are entitled to this and people not adhering to this puts others that do in a bad position. Yeah you MAY get home quicker but you leave yourself open to be as directed at the end of your duty as you havent followed correct procedure. Im glad im no longer a delivery rep as I began to tear my hair out the way some posties ruin the job for others and are completely stubborn on doing so.

BTW in our office (where people here you scream ,but ignore it) if its a heavey day management will let you book your meal relief as overtime, so you can go home on time but with 40 minutes overtime, part of our office were doing this everyday at one time.

By doing this though your working a straight 8 hours without a break which isn't in the best interests of anybody's health and well-being. The trouble is we are all still stuck in the old days mentality of job and finish when you could be home after 2nd delivery by 1130, those days have long gone and people need to start looking after their selves as they will end up ill from the job.

Looks like he swerved that one Postman, I would like to know what's unintelligent about encouraging someone to have their break or risk what happened to them happening again and forfeiting their insurance rights should they have an accident.

I had worked my break so made time ,this is never usually a problem until today, I was told to deliver it on my way home ,as I dont take a van home I had to use my bike.

If you worked your break you were due a break. Was this taken into account for your finishing time. Whether you had time to spare or not I'm amazed you agreed to this. The problem is if the management see you as a pushover they're going to push you over. I bet you could name lots of people in your office who would never even be asked to do this. A word of advice - take your break.

Someone replied was I forced with a gun for instance, I have never needed to tell a Dom im not doing something before and have no idea how far you can refuse things without getting into trouble, I know some offices are clued up on whats acceptable and what isnt but not everyone knows, I know about the break situation but it wasnt my point, I was asking

This question has been answered several time but I'll say it again, NO he cannot make you deliver mail on your way home on your own bike but he can make you stay and work until your due finish time which would include going out and delivering but only in official vehicles.

I was forced by my manager to deliver mail on my way home today,only one bundle of mail 1 mile out of my way on my own bike , I dont have a basket on my bike so had to carry mail in hand , also I dont have a cycle helemt as im on a rural driving delivery. I just wondered if safelty issues have been taken seriously here ?

Yes if their is sufficient time left in your working day.

on your own bike ,as thats what happened.

No, well at least not without the relevant PPE (helmet and Hi-Viz, panniers etc) and safety checks.

Off course the questions that may be asked at any subsequent hearing is -

1. "Did the manager specifically instruct you to use your personal cycle, or did he say just do this on your way home".
2. "Did you advise the manager that you were unable to do it on your cycle because of lack of PPE and safety equipment"
3. "Was is possible to use official transport to complete the task and return to the office within the time left on your duty"

All of these questions have a bearing on the situation and only you and they know what was said/done.

I think its probably best to say lesson learned and move on.
