Smoking

Post by CHARLIE BEAR »

Hello again comrades,

I tried to light my fag as I prepared to cycle my way to my first delivery point yesterday and nearly set my Hi-Vis alight (no great loss there). The windy conditions made the whole process very difficult.

I understand the objection to smoking, but I cannot understand why I can't light up in the yard, which has a degree of shelter, and then leave for the delivery. I noticed that the 'Cluster Manager' was puffing away outside the gate as I tried to light up my gasper. The loading bay is hardly an 'enclosed public area'.

What do you think comrades?

Smoking

Post by JAMESMARSH1980 »

We all smoke in the yard, we've also got one of those designated smoking areas in the yard (basicly a little see through hut type thing) but we only go in there if its raining, if its nixe we all stand in the yard and puff away, the managers do it so why shouldnt we, I guess it differs from office to office.

Lads and Lassies for the definative Royal Mail position go to the CWU website and under health and safety look for LTB 397/07 dated 03 May 2007 - Royal Mail Group Smoking Policy: (Final Revised Policy - Version 14 & Guidance Version 1.3).

Personally I managed after many attempts to finally kick the dreaded weed (cancer stick) habit about 18 months ago. Certainly feel much healthier for it but often wonder how I ever could have afforded the cost of a packet of twenty.

So for instance the car park is ok.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

There is a grievance procedure at BMC regarding this that has been submitted, I understand, as RM's final policy, was based on the incorrect Guidance Version - and things were omitted.

Why don't the Government ban fags completely then? I'll bet you £billions in tax money they won't! :mad

I only started smoking because of the solids I have to deal with, mis-management, and the stress of the job. When I leave RM, I will also leave the cigarettes behind too. Previously, I had not smoked for 10 years. It's my way of dealing with it.

A usual quote from the smoker is "this will cost the Government due to the loss of tax from the sale of cigarettes". Maybe we should take a leaf out of the Irish book who have had the ban in place for over 2 years.

THERE is big money in rubbish. Ireland has increased on-the-spot fines for the careless and uncaring who drop their litter on the streets by €25 to €150.

For example Dublin City Council alone issued nearly 4,000 such fines last year.

That is a fair few bob in anybody’s language.

In case you are wondering what I am getting at let me explain at the outset that I have no sympathy for litterbugs. According to reports in Ireland smokers are responsible for most of the rubbish and experts believe that this is mainly as a result of the smoking ban.

Pedestrians seem to be the main culprits.

Now that the smoking ban has finally come into operation in England will we see an increase in the amount of rubbish on the streets and how much is it going to cost us?

I hope they implement this form of charge for lazy postal staff who stand outside our building and are too lazy to put their cigarette butts in a bin...If I have any form of rubbish as like most people I use a bin.. Not generalising but is it a form of behaviour for smokers to just chuck their butts on the floor?...

The entrance to our office looks an absolute disgrace, due to the disgusting behaviour of "SOME" of our colleagues
