OFCOM has been slammed by local MP Sandra Osborne, who believes plans it has put forward make people look like “second-class citizens”.
Ofcom has launched a consultation, which began last week and runs until January 5 next year, into proposals for the future of the postal service.
Ofcom assumed responsibility for the regulation of postal services this month and its fundamental duty, as set out in the Postal Services Act 2011, is to secure a financially sustainable universal postal service.
One of its first acts in its new role is proposing to permit Royal Mail freedom to set the majority of its own prices, while also imposing a safeguard price cap on second-class stamps.
Ms Osborne was stunned at the proposal and has urged a strong response to the consultation from constituents.
She said: “I am dismayed by this proposal. This seems to be a case of second-class stamps for second-class citizens!” Ms Osborne added: “This is part of a wider consultation document which demands a strong response.
“I will be making my own submission but I would also urge concerned constituents to look at these proposals and to make their views known.

Re: MP slams Ofcom plans
we were told on tuesday at our love in team talk that royal mail will ramp up first class stamp prices because they want people to switch to second..it gives them an extra day to handle the mail.
they tried it before by raising the first and lowering second but by only a couple of pence so no great switch.
so once again ,if youve got the money you can have a first class service ,everyone else get to the back please

I thought that the whole idea of being able to change prices was
to enable RM to lower prices and bring back the customers from DHL & TNT etc.
Pricing yourself out of the competition is pretty dangerous especially if the
competition keeps upstaging RM by dropping their prices.

The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

I would imagine reading behind the lines it is for future deregulation especially the terms of the uso .I have long felt that Royal Mail wish to create a rolling system ( probably here with p and l anyway )where not every body gets a daily delivery and that there will be constantly a 2nd class "sludge" left in delivery frames .First class stamped will go out every day.
The justification for this 2 tier system will be , well you're getting it cheaper so what do you expect ?

if royal mail are allowed to charge tnt and others a higher price for delivering their stuff, then these companies would have no option but to increase their prices.Broxi51 wrote:I thought that the whole idea of being able to change prices was

Royal Mail will become popularly known through the newspapers as 2nd class mail. That will be our new name, further encouraging people to choose email. Funny as everything else seems to speed up in the world royal mail decides to go in the opposite direction.
