Ferocious dogs might have the mailman quaking in his boots but reversing cars are actually his biggest threat.

Almost 200 posties have been hit by reversing cars in the past year alone, Australia Post says.

Victoria had the highest number of incidents, with 77 mailmen struck by vehicles backing out of driveways.

Both NSW and Queensland had 33 posties hit followed by 22 in South Australia and 21 in Western Australia.

Across the country, 186 motorcycle posties havebeen struck by cars reversing from driveways in the last year alone.

A spokesperson for Australia Post said figures were not available for the Northern Territory, ACT and Tasmania.

"Footpath accidents are an ever-present danger for posties and everyone needs to be particularly cautious when reversing their cars out of driveways," Australia Post spokesperson Steve Ousley said on Monday.

Nearly half of all postie injuries that happen outdoors are the result of being struck by reversing cars.

Posties will be delivering postcards to residents across the country in coming days to remind them to watch out for posties and other footpath users.

In NSW, 2600 posties deliver more than 7.35 million mail articles to 2.9 million addresses each business day.

About 1100 Queensland posties deliver more than 4.28 million mail articles to 2.2 million addresses each business day.

"They spend a large proportion of their working day on the road or on the footpath," Mr Ousley said.

"It's not just posties that drivers need to be aware of when reversing - it's also other pedestrians, including small children who sometimes can be difficult to see."

If it's such a big problem in Oz, couldn't motorists just reverse onto their own drives when coming home ? :hmmmm

What and run their own dog and wife over instead?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
