I was "conditionally offered" 24 hours delivery/driving and was looking forward to the job, I have got to the "PROCESSING SECURITY CHECKS" stage. However I have a PhD and have now been offered a job that will be a good career move and want to take it. I have not signed the contract for job2 yet, but am 90% sure I will get it. Can I cancel my application with RM at this stage? All I have agreed to is that the security checks proceed, I have not signed anything or had a letter offering the job.

Yes I intend to. However it only lasts until early next year at which time I might want a RM job again (a friend says I am a doctor of letters now). Do they see it as an offer accepted because I let them go forward with the security checks? I which case they might be wary of another application next year.

Just contact them back, tell them your circumstances have changed and you don't want it anymore.
It won't affect you if you re apply again in a years time, they don't hold grudges...well,until you start the job and cut off.
Seriously though,don't worry about it.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

You have sold your soul to the devil now...there is no going back.
They will come for you in the night, drag you screaming from your bed, force you into a uniform and march you down to your local Delivery Office.
Or much more likely they wouldn't even notice if you didn't turn up at all.
We will be employing about 20,000 people over the next couple of months...they can't even keep track of the people who want to work for us.

You have no contract with RM and so are a free agent , personally I would let the checks continue .If they subsequently offer you work you can tell them you have a temporary job but ask to remain on their books as someone who has completed the security checks and may be available at some point down the line , can't see that hurting.Good luck in your new job.
