Frustration at 10 years of second-class post

A RESIDENT who has spent the past decade regularly receiving other people’s mail and having his go astray has said he no longer wants to act as an “unpaid postman”.

In the past four years David Busfield, 64, of Chapel Road, Weldon, estimates his neighbours have had to deliver his mail and he has received mail belonging to them about 60 times.

Mr Busfield, who has received visits and reassurances in the past, said after complaints problems initially stop before resuming several weeks later.

He said the issues began when he no longer had a regular postman.

Mr Busfield said all of the neighbouring houses, some of which have been joined and are not in numerical order, and his own have their numbers on display.

As a result of a bill arriving late, Mr Busfield incurred a £15 late payment charge with Barclaycard earlier this year.

Mr Busfield, who is editor of the Dinky Toys Collectors Association’s quarterly publication, said letters from his readers have also arrived late or failed to arrive at all.

He said: “With Dinky Toys Collectors Association we have quite a lot of members of a certain age who haven’t got computers and don’t use emails. It’s frustrating. Sometimes I don’t get my mail for two or three days if my neighbours are away.”

He added: “I would clearly like the Post Office to solve the problem because I’ve got 10 to 15 complaints sitting in my email which have never been satisfactorily resolved. I’d like an apology and wouldn’t mind some compensation as it cost me money with Barclaycard.

“Most importantly I’d like them to deliver my mail to my house and my neighbours’ mail to their houses – to do their jobs.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are concerned to learn Mr Busfield has again experienced problems with the delivery of mail. Following previous incidents, measures were put in place to reduce the risk of future problems. These will now be reviewed as a matter of urgency.

“The delivery staff responsible for this latest failure in our standards will be dealt with directly by the manager of Corby Delivery Office in line with our established procedures. Our manager is also contacting Mr Busfield to apologise personally.”
